ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BOOK
At the Water's Edge by Sara Gruen tells the story of Maddie, a young American woman who travels to Scotland with her husband, Ellis, and their friend, Hank, in 1942, in search of the Loch Ness Monster. Maddie is a reluctant participant in this quest, which is fueled by her husband's obsession and his father's previous attempts to find the monster.

As the trio settles into a remote Scottish inn, Maddie finds herself increasingly isolated and out of place. The story explores themes of identity, trauma, and the clash between cultures, as Maddie struggles to navigate the complexities of wartime Scotland and the strained dynamics of her own marriage. The narrative also delves into the impact of war on individuals and communities, as rationing, blackouts, and the presence of soldiers constantly remind them of the global conflict. Maddie must also confront her own mental health issues which are exacerbated by the stress of this environment.
