They travel via a method called tessering to different planets, and soon discover an evil force known as the "Black Thing" and a dark planet called Camazotz, where the minds of the inhabitants are controlled by a single entity called IT. The story uses concepts of science, math, and faith to explore themes of good versus evil, conformity versus individuality, and the importance of love.
