Sinossi

"Don't push me in a corner. You have no idea what I am capable of."
After the tumultuous scandal when becoming a widow, Diana has become a blushing bride once again. She and her dashing new husband Peter Thornton, Duke of Avondale, are eager to embark upon their life together and leave the ghosts of the past behind. The world has never looked so bright for the once unfortunate duchess, and her joy continues to grow. Embraced by her peers and her beloved husband alike, Diana turns toward the future with a renewed optimism and seizes the second chance to build the future of her dreams.
But some things are too good to be true, and some demons refuse to stay banished. The happiest moments in Diana's life are suddenly tempered by the resurgence of a familiar and dangerous threat. Torn unwillingly miles apart, husband and wife must struggle to get by alone as an insidious plot brews in the background. Diana flees to the country, where she learns to balance the weight of her burdens with the sheer bliss of motherhood. Meanwhile, back in London, Peter works to uncover the truth of the secret danger lurking around his family.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

"A Study in Scarlet" is a novella written by British mystery novelist Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887. It is also his first work to feature Sherlock Holmes as the protagonist.
Although readers are accustomed to calling "A Study in Scarlet" "the first case" because it introduces Sherlock Holmes, John H. Watson and everything about Baker Street to readers for the first time, In later stories, readers will also be able to see the cases Holmes took on before "A Study in Scarlet."

The author dedicates his story to ‘The Happy Few’. This presumably means those who lead lives free of hypocrisy and deceit. They are few indeed in the second part of this authoritative novel of early 19th Century France. Julien Sorel leaves the country town of Verrieres and flees to Paris with the sound of guns in pursuit. He is to take up a post as secretary to M. de la Mole, an influential businessman in the capital. Peasant though he may be, Julien is a man of ideas and in the drawing rooms of Paris in 1830, gripped by the fear of a second revolution, anyone with intellect is treated with disdain. However, Mathilde, the daughter of the house, has a reverence for past days of glory and honour and, although repulsed by his low status, sees in Julien a chance to break away from her boring suitors and the staleness of her social life. She seduces and rejects him twice before Julien learns the ways of polite society, convinces her of his merit, she becomes infatuated and soon expects his child When her father is informed, he requires reassurance that Julien is not just an ambitious social climber who exploits women for the benefit of his career so he writes to Madame de Renal, with whom Julien had a passionate love affair. The young secretary learns of the nature of her reply and his following action results in a trial which could end in one of three ways: his freedom to live with Mademoiselle de la Mole, to run away with Madame de Renal or death by guillotine. But while in prison the young cleric finds the truth of his beliefs and convictions and he’s not prepared to compromise!

The story of Oliver Twist - orphaned, and set upon by evil and adversity from his first breath - shocked readers when it was published. After running away from the workhouse and pompous beadle Mr Bumble, Oliver finds himself lured into a den of thieves peopled by vivid and memorable characters - the Artful Dodger, vicious burglar Bill Sikes, his dog Bull's Eye, and prostitute Nancy, all watched over by cunning master-thief Fagin. Combining elements of Gothic Romance, the Newgate Novel and popular melodrama, Dickens created an entirely new kind of fiction, scathing in its indictment of a cruel society, and pervaded by an unforgettable sense of threat and mystery.
