Sinossi

The foundation of a serious and scientific study of Greek religion, as distinct from the mere mythology of Hellas, may almost be said to have been an achievement of the last generation of scholars. And it is only through recent research that the Hellenic spirit, so creative and imperial in the domains of literature, art and science, can be recognised as manifesting itself not unworthily in the sphere of religion.
The history of Greek religion means, partly, the account and the interpretation of the various rites, cults and cult-ideas of the various Greek families, tribes and communities; partly the estimate of the religious temperament, both of the masses and of the individuals who emerged from among them and of whom some record has been preserved.
Now as the Greek world in the long period of its independence was never organised as a single State, the attempt to give a summary and general account of its religion is confronted with the perplexity arising from the often incalculable diversity of religious forms and ideas in the different centres of its social life, which was in the highest degree centrifugal. Nevertheless, as will be shown, we find in the midst of manifold local variation certain uniformity of religious psychology, making for uniformity of practice, which enables us to deliver certain general pronouncements about the whole.
Ancient Sources: Literary.—Our real knowledge of any ancient religion depends obviously on the copiousness and variety of our records. And it is likely to be more luminous, if the society in question expressed its religious life not only in surviving literature, but also in surviving art. Of both these kinds the student of Greek religion has an unusually rich material.

Papal supremacy in ecclesiastical matters had long been asserted and was, by and large, unchallenged. But in the late 11th century, Pope Gregory VII asserted authority in the temporal sphere as well. In a long dispute with Emperor Henry IV over who had the right to appoint bishops and abbots, Gregory decreed that the pope “alone may use the imperial insignia,” that “all princes shall kiss the feet of the pope alone,” and “that it may be permitted to him to depose emperors.” The popes asserted their dominion over the whole of Christendom, based on a spurious document known as the Donation of Constantine. This 8th century forgery asserted that Constantine the Great had gifted all of the West to Pope Sylvester I, in gratitude for his baptism. There is, of course, no evidence of Sylvester ever exercising imperial powers, and the document was determined to be a forgery in the 15th century. But beyond the Donation, Gregory could also point to the fact that emperors had received the imperial anointing and crown from the hands of the pope since Charlemagne.
What was new was the vehemence with which Gregory pursued his claims. After a bitter exchange between pope and emperor over ecclesiastical governance, he attempted to break the impasse by excommunicating and deposing Henry. Conversely, the emperors asserted that God had charged the temporal authorities with the protection and guidance of the Church of God. After all, the German emperors before Henry IV had confirmed papal elections, resolved ecclesiastical disputes, regulated dioceses, and appointed their bishops.
In conjunction with these disputes, supporters of each side formed political factions and thus found themselves at odds with their rivals. The Guelphs and Ghibellines fought several conflicts in Italy in the 12th and 13th centuries, and they were significant in laying the grounds for the independence of the Italian city-states, as well as for Germany.

How do we overcome polarization in American society? How do we advocate for justice when one side won't listen to the other and cycles of outrage escalate?

These questions have been pressing for years, but the emergence of a vocal, virulent Christian nationalism have made it even more urgent that we find a way forward.

In three brief, incisive chapters Pamela Cooper-White uncovers the troubling extent of Christian nationalism, explores its deep psychological roots, and discusses ways in which advocates for justice can safely and effectively attempt to talk across the deep divides in our society.

Now a green open space enjoyed by residents, Fort Hunt, Virginia, about fifteen miles south of Washington, DC, was the site of one of the highest-level, clandestine operations during World War II.

Shortly after the United States entered World War II, the US military realized that it had to work on exploiting any advantages it might gain on the Axis Powers. One part of these endeavors was to establish a secret facility not too close, but also not too far from the Pentagon which would interrogate and eavesdrop on the highest-level Nazi prisoners and also translate and analyze captured German war documents.

That complex was established at Fort Hunt, known by the code name: PO Box 1142. The American servicemen who interrogated German prisoners or translated captured German documents were young, bright, hardworking, and absolutely dedicated to their work. Many of them were Jews, who had escaped Nazi Germany as children—some had come to America with their parents, others had escaped alone, but their experiences and those they had been forced to leave behind meant they all had personal motivation to do whatever they could to defeat Nazi Germany. They were perfect for the difficult and complex job at hand.
