Sinossi

In "Vanishing Landmarks: The Trend Toward Bolshevism," Leslie M. Shaw meticulously examines the socio-political landscape leading to the rise of Bolshevism, drawing parallels between historical events and contemporary socio-political movements. Shaw's literary style merges rigorous historical analysis with poignant narrative techniques, rendering complex ideological debates accessible to a broad readership. Through a critical lens, this book situates Bolshevism within a wider context of upheaval, exploring its implications on identity, governance, and societal structure in an increasingly globalized world. Leslie M. Shaw, a prominent scholar in political theory and history, draws on a wealth of experience from both academia and activism. Her journey through various socio-political environments has afforded her a unique perspective on the persistent allure of radical ideologies. Shaw's previous works have established her as a thought leader, and her deep-seated interest in the intersection of history and ideology shines through in this compelling analysis, reflecting her commitment to demystifying complex socio-political phenomena. I highly recommend "Vanishing Landmarks" to readers interested in the evolution of political thought and its lingering impact on modern society. Shaw's insights are not only timely but also crucial for understanding how historical trajectories influence current ideological trends. This book is an indispensable resource for students, academics, and anyone keen to grapple with the forces shaping our world.

An accessible yet erudite deep dive into how platforms are remaking experiences of death

Since the internet's earliest days, people have died and mourned online. In quiet corners of past iterations of the web, the dead linger. But attempts at preserving the data of the dead are often ill-fated, for websites and devices decay and die, just as people do. Death disrupts technologists' plans for platforms. It reveals how digital production is always collaborative, undermining the entrepreneurial platform economy and highlighting the flaws of techno-solutionism.

Big Tech has authority not only over people's lives but over their experiences of death as well. Ordinary users and workers, though, advocate for changes to tech companies' policies around death. Drawing on internet histories along with interviews with founders of digital afterlife startups, caretakers of illness blogs, and transhumanist tinkerers, the technology scholar Tamara Kneese takes listeners on a vibrant tour of the ways that platforms and people work together to care for digital remains. What happens when commercial platforms encounter the messiness of mortality?

'Oh yes, he seemed to say, Death is stronger than I am.'

A deeply reflective and profound collection of essays meditating on the beauty, fragility and fleeting nature of life, from one of the most pioneering modernist voices in literary history: Virginia Woolf.

First published in 1942 after Woolf's death, The Death of the Moth and Other Essays effortlessly blends candid personal reflection, social critique and literary analysis. Across the collection, Woolf explores everything from life, death, the creative process, politics, nature and the role of women in contemporary society, always told with her characteristic lyrical style and sharp intellect. The title essay, 'The Death of the Moth', written in the midst of Woolf's own depression, utilises the image of a moth's final moments as a powerful metaphor for the fleeting nature of life. The result is a profoundly moving and exquisitely written exploration to the meaning of life as we know it. This audiobook edition is skilfully read by Georgia Maguire.
Virginia Woolf (1882 – 1941) was one of the most significant novelists of the twentieth century. A modernist writer and progressive thinker, she is known for her stream of consciousness narrative style and influence on feminist criticism. Her works have been translated into over fifty languages and are widely read and adapted to this day.

    Settler Militarism - World War...

Under martial law during World War II, Hawai'i was located at the intersection of home front and war front. In Settler Militarism, Juliet Nebolon shows how settler colonialism and militarization simultaneously perpetuated, legitimated, and concealed one another in wartime Hawai'i for the purposes of empire building in Asia and the Pacific Islands. She demonstrates how settler militarism operated through a regime of racial liberal biopolitics that purported to protect all people in Hawai'i, even as it intensified the racial and colonial differentiation of Kanaka Maoli, Asian settlers, and white settlers. Nebolon identifies settler militarism's inherent contradiction: It depends on life, labor, and land to reproduce itself, yet it avariciously consumes, via violent and extractive projects, those same lives and natural resources that it needs to subsist. From vaccination and blood bank programs to the administration of internment and prisoner-of-war camps, Nebolon reveals how settler militarism and racial liberal biopolitics operated together in the service of capitalism. Collectively, the social reproduction of these regimes created the conditions for the late-twentieth-century expansion of United States military empire.
