The Rape of the Lock is a mock-heroic narrative poem written by Alexander Pope, first published anonymously in Lintot's Miscellany in May 1712 in two cantos (334 lines), but then revised, expanded and reissued under Pope's name on March 2, 1714, in a much-expanded 5-canto version (794 lines). The final form was available in 1717 with the addition of Clarissa's speech on good humour. The poem satirizes a petty squabble by comparing it to the epic world of the gods. It was based on an incident recounted by Pope's friend, John Caryll. Arabella Fermor and her suitor, Lord Petre, were both from aristocratic recusant Catholic families at a period in England when under such laws as the Test Act, all denominations except Anglicanism suffered legal restrictions and penalties (for example Petre could not take up his place in the House of Lords as a Catholic). Petre, lusting after Arabella, had cut off a lock of her hair without permission, and the consequent argument had created a breach between the two families. Pope, also a Catholic, wrote the poem at the request of friends in an attempt to "comically merge the two." He utilized the character Belinda to represent Arabella and introduced an entire system of "sylphs," or guardian spirits of virgins, a parodied version of the gods and goddesses of conventional epic. What My Hand Say, on one hand is a bold unapologetic tribute of black people living their livesin South Carolina. While on other hand, it is a palpable reckoning with the state’s weightedhistory. In this book, Glenis Redmond’s poems span from the 1800s to the present. The impactof going from poem to poem purposely causes emotional whiplash, as if to say welcome to thevolatile place, in which “I/we have always had to live.”

William Collins Books and Decca Records are proud to present ARGO Classics, a historic catalogue of classic prose and verse read by some of the world’s most renowned voices. Originally released as vinyl records, these expertly remastered stories are now available to download for the first time.
‘Life is as tedious as a twice-told tale
Vexing the dull ear of a drowsy man.’
Shakespeare's King John is a rarely performed history which tells the story of John's turbulent reign from 1199 to 1216..
King John goes to war against the French after claims that his nephew should be king instead. John has conflict with the church, orders his nephew's death, and turns the nobles against himself. In the end, John dies from poison, the French retreat, and his son becomes King.
All of the Shakespeare plays within the ARGO Classics catalogue are performed by the Marlowe Dramatic Society and Professional Players. The Marlowe was founded in 1907 with a mission to focus on effective delivery of verse, respect the integrity of texts, and rescue neglected plays by Shakespeare’s contemporaries and the less performed plays of Shakespeare himself. The Marlowe has performed annually at Cambridge Arts Theatre since its opening in 1936 and continues to produce some of the finest actors of their generations.
Thurston Dart, Professor of Music at London University and a Fellow of Jesus College Cambridge, directed the music for this production.
The full cast includes: Michael Hordern; Anthony Jacobs; David Jones; Tony Church; Roderick Cook; David Buck; John Kimber; George Rylands; Toby Robertson; Richard Marquand; Anthony Jacobs; Roger Prior; Gary Watson; Donald Beves; Olive Gregg; Margaretta Scott; Christine Baker; Freda Dowie.
Shakespeare's King John, a top performing play in the European theatre scene, is a short but powerful exploration of political intrigue and personal conflict. Regarded as one of the best of Shakespeare's lesser-known works, it continues to captivate audiences with its timeless themes and compelling narrative.
For fans of Richard Parsons (GCSE English Shakespeare Text Guide), and Arthur Miller (Incident at Vichy).
