War and Peace is a novel by Leo Tolstoy, first published from 1865 to 1869 in Russkii Vestnik, which tells the story of Russian society during the Napoleonic Era. It is usually described as one of Tolstoy's two major masterpieces (the other being Anna Karenina) as well as one of the world's greatest novels.
War and Peace offered a new kind of fiction, with a great many characters caught up in a plot that covered nothing less than the grand subjects indicated by the title, combined with the equally large topics of youth, marriage, age, and death. Though it is often called a novel today, it broke so many conventions of the form that it was not considered a novel in its time. Indeed, Tolstoy himself considered Anna Karenina (1878) to be his first attempt at a novel in the European sense.

Schiller's tragedy depicts the final days of Mary, Queen of Scots, who has been imprisoned by her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I, because of her potential claim on the English throne. The action of the play revolves around an attempt to rescue Mary from prison and Elizabeth's indecision over whether or not to have her executed. The 1801 translation is by Joseph Mellish, a friend of Schiller's. Poems of the Orient

Khayyam

The Rubá’iyát of Omar Khayyam, in the famous translation by Edward FitzGerald, remains one of the most popular poems. It expressed the fascination of Victorian England with the Orient. Here, it forms the main work in the first half, along with other shorter poems by other leading Persian and Indian figures, including Rumi, Sa’di and Rabindranath Tagore. The second half is devoted to works written by Western poets on the theme of the East with The Veiled Prophet of Khorassan, an excerpt from Thomas Moore’s Lalla Rookh – one of the best-sellers of the early nineteenth century.

In the early 1900s a new movement in poetry began.  With the new century came new thinking, a reaction to both romanticism and the more formal, structured poetry of the Victorian era.  Here was poetry designed to be simple, clear and precise, rather than be adorned and encrusted with more from the lexicon than what was actually needed. 
 
The original ideas sprang from T. E Hulme and from these Ezra Pound created the structure for its development.  Akin to the Ancient Greek lyricists and the Japanese Haiku poets who went from fixed meters to free verse. 
 
I. Direct treatment of the “thing," whether subjective or objective.  II. To use absolutely no word that does not contribute to the presentation.  III. As regarding rhythm: to compose in sequence of the musical phrase, not in sequence of the metronome. 
 
Hilda Doolittle (H.D.) William Carlos Williams, Richard Aldington and James Joyce added their talents to an anthology edited by Pound, swiftly followed by Amy Lowell assuming leadership and adding both monies and 3 further anthology volumes.   By the end of the Great War in 1918 the movement was being absorbed into the broader modernist movement.  Its time may have passed but its indelible mark was made.
