Beschreibung

Anna Karenina is a sweeping masterpiece of world literature that explores love, passion, loyalty, and the profound consequences of human choice within the rigid structures of 19th-century Russian society. In this monumental novel, Leo Tolstoy weaves together intimate personal dramas and expansive social commentary to create a powerful portrait of individuals struggling between desire and duty.

At the heart of the story is Anna Karenina, a beautiful and intelligent woman trapped in a loveless marriage to the dignified but emotionally distant government official, Alexei Karenin. When she meets the charming and charismatic Count Vronsky, Anna is drawn into a passionate affair that defies societal conventions. What begins as an awakening of long-suppressed emotion soon spirals into scandal, isolation, and inner turmoil, as Anna confronts the harsh judgment of a society that offers little forgiveness to those who stray from its moral code.

Running parallel to Anna's tragic journey is the story of Konstantin Levin, a thoughtful landowner searching for meaning in his personal and spiritual life. Through his courtship of the gentle Kitty Shcherbatsky and his reflections on work, faith, and family, Levin's path offers a contrasting exploration of fulfillment grounded in sincerity and moral growth. Together, these intertwined narratives illuminate the complexities of love in its many forms—romantic passion, marital devotion, familial bonds, and spiritual yearning.

Tolstoy's storytelling is remarkable for its psychological depth and realism. He examines the inner lives of his characters with extraordinary sensitivity, capturing their doubts, hopes, and contradictions. The novel also paints a vivid panorama of Russian aristocratic society, from glittering ballrooms in St. Petersburg to the quiet rhythms of rural life, revealing the tensions between modernity and tradition, urban sophistication and agrarian simplicity.

Profound, emotionally rich, and timeless in its insight into the human condition, Anna Karenina is more than a story of forbidden love—it is a meditation on happiness, morality, freedom, and the search for authentic living. Tolstoy's enduring classic continues to resonate with readers around the world as one of the greatest novels ever written.

Twas the Night Before Christmas has been called "arguably the best-known verses ever written by an American" and is largely responsible for some of the conceptions of Santa Claus from the mid-nineteenth century to today. It has had a massive effect on the history of Christmas gift-giving. Before the poem gained wide popularity, American ideas had varied considerably about Saint Nicholas and other Christmastide visitors. A Visit from St. Nicholas eventually was set to music and has been recorded by many artists.

In Beauty of Form and Beauty of Mind, Hans Christian Andersen offers one of his most mature and quietly devastating tales—a reflective allegory about love, art, and the cost of mistaking appearance for substance.
Alfred, a gifted young sculptor, becomes captivated by Kaela, a woman of flawless beauty whose presence seems to embody everything his art strives to achieve. Enchanted by her outward perfection, he fails to ask what lies beneath. Their union, admired by society and celebrated as ideal, slowly reveals a profound imbalance—one that beauty alone cannot sustain.
As time passes, illness, loss, and reflection strip away illusion, forcing Alfred to confront a truth he had long ignored: that form, however exquisite, is transient, while the life of the mind and spirit endures. In the thoughtful, unassuming Sophy, he discovers a deeper companionship—one grounded not in admiration, but in understanding.
Written with restraint and moral clarity, this story stands apart from Andersen’s lighter fairy tales. It is a philosophical meditation on art, marriage, and human fulfillment, asking a timeless question: what kind of beauty truly elevates us—and what happens when we learn the answer too late?
Narrated with grace and emotional subtlety by Michele Wagner, this audiobook invites listeners into a world where elegance conceals emptiness, and quiet wisdom carries the greater weight.

Edward Alexander Crowley was born on 12th October 1875 to wealthy parents in Royal Leamington Spa in Warwickshire.

He was educated at Malvern College, Tonbridge School, Eastbourne College and finally Trinity College, Cambridge where he focused on his passions of mountaineering and poetry and published several volumes.

Life for Crowley was to abandon his parents’ Christian faith and instead to inject himself into Western esotericism. In 1898, he joined the esoteric Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and was trained in ceremonial magic before studying both Hindu and Buddhist practices in India.

On his Egyptian honeymoon in 1904 he claimed contact with an entity―Aiwass―who gave him the sacred Book of the Law which served as the basis for the Thelema religion where he identified as its prophet. During the Great War, which he spent in the United States, he claimed to be working for British Intelligence but by the 1920s he had decamped to pursue a libertine lifestyle in Sicily, and in the ensuing scandals was evicted by the Italian Government.

He divided the following two decades between France, Germany, and England, and the continuing promotion of Thelema.

During his life he gained widespread notoriety for his drug use, his bisexuality, and his alarming views on society. In short, polite society frowned on his ways, his thoughts and his influence but to many others his stance had much of value. Even after death he was a darling for the 60’s counterculture but his influence has since waned.

His literary works were both prolific and covered many topics. In the early part of his career he published many poetry books, even plays, before his darker and more forceful works came to dominate his output.

Aleister Crowley died on 1st December 1947 at Hastings in England. He was 72.
