Sinossi

"Cracking the Code" explores the captivating history and modern applications of cryptography, emphasizing its critical role in military history, technology, and national security. From ancient ciphers to complex algorithms, the book reveals how secret codes have influenced geopolitical power, shaped the outcomes of wars, and protected sensitive information for intelligence agencies and military organizations. One intriguing aspect is how the evolution of cryptographic techniques directly correlates with the need for secure communication in various historical conflicts. The book progresses chronologically, first examining the historical development of cryptography across different cultures and empires. It then transitions to the technological advancements, contrasting mechanical encryption devices like the Enigma machine with contemporary computer-based cryptography. Finally, it analyzes the modern usage of cryptography in espionage and cyber warfare. By connecting cryptography with military history, technology studies, and political science, "Cracking the Code" offers a broad understanding of its impact on society and international relations, even touching upon the ethical debates surrounding government surveillance and privacy. The book's approach avoids complex mathematical formulas, making it accessible to a wide audience.

Mobilizing the Power to Stop Harm, Cultivating the Love to HealWe are living in a world where the depths of division, violence, and destruction can no longer be ignored. From political polarization leading to the erosion of the democratic process to the climate crisis continuing to perpetuate racial inequity, we need changes that heal harms at the personal and systemic levels.Escalated forms of harm require an equally escalated response. Yet social movements often use tactics that have a tendency to escalate an "us vs. them," "right vs. wrong" worldview not conducive to healing. In Fierce Vulnerability, activist and author Kazu Haga argues this binary worldview is at the heart of what is destroying our relationships and our planet and offers a new way to create healing by combining the time-honored lineage of nonviolent action with the sciences of trauma healing and the promises of spiritual practice. Fierce Vulnerability realizes we can't "shut down" injustice any more than we can "shut down" trauma; if healing is our goal, we need social movements that center relationships and promote healing.

Byzantium may have reached its zenith during the Middle Ages as Constantinople, but it had previously stood out among Greek and other ancient cities for its wealth, size, and strategic location. It is probable that given the location, if the Megarans had not founded their city where they did, another Greek polis would have. It is equally probable that any city in that area would have enjoyed success from the wealth generated from its involvement in the key two-way trade between the Greek states and their numerous colonies around the Black Sea and the increasing general east-west trade between the Roman Empire and the exotic lands to the east.
Byzantium’s position as guardian of the Bosphorus gave it advantages that stood the city in good stead for thousands of years and consolidated the city as an intercontinental and international trading hub. Inevitably, such a vibrant international center produced many creative thinkers, and Byzantium was the birthplace or home to such figures as Homerus, a tragedian who lived in the early 3rd century BCE. Another overlooked figure was Philo, an engineer who lived from 280-220 BCE and is known as Philo Mechanicus. Although he was primarily an engineer, he was also a physicist and writer on mechanics. His most important work was the huge Syntaxis, which contained sections on general mathematics, mechanics, harbor construction, siege engine construction, pneumatics, mechanical toys, and coding for military use. The military sections Belopoeica and Poliorcetica survived, and they detailed how to build missiles, construct fortresses, and how to properly provision an army.

    Reincarnation - Conquering...

"Transmigration is not a question of religion. It is a question of science. You are a spiritual being, but because you are materially conditioned, you are under the spell of material nature. When your body is annihilated, you are not finished. You get another body, just as you may change your coat and shirt. Eternally the spirit soul within the body remains the same." Bhaktivedanta Swami

Throughout history, some of the most thoughtful minds have advocated that life does not end with the death of our body, but continues via a process known as reincarnation. The Vedic literature advocates that the soul, or atma, gives life to the body. Life does not arise from a particular combination of material elements as some modern scientists theorize. At the time of death, we leave one body and enter a new one. That is called reincarnation.

We can observe we change from one body to another throughout our lifetime. Our body at birth is completely different from our adult body. Yet throughout the conscious self remains the same. Similarly, the self remains the same at death and transfers from one body to the next in the cycle of reincarnation. Our present body is the result of a long series of actions and reactions in previous lives. The law that governs this is known as karma. Our previous actions have produced our present body, and our current actions will determine our next body. Only in the human form can we free ourselves from the endless cycle of reincarnation, of birth, and death. As Krishna states in Bhagavad Gita “From the highest planet in the material world down to the lowest, all are places of misery wherein repeated birth and death take place. But one attains to My abode.. never takes birth again.”

Here in this unique audio work are the ancient secrets of reincarnation from a 50-year devotee of the Vedas and devotional yoga. A rare and vitally important mystical audiobook adventure.

Advocacy is a tricky pursuit in Singapore. Your motives can be questioned, your activities monitored, and your scope for action limited. Despite the constraints, civil society activists have persisted, finding ways to pursue their cause and to try to bring about the changes they believe important for Singapore.

In 2013 a small group of civil society stalwarts set out to acknowledge the contributions of these unsung heroes. The Singapore Advocacy Awards was launched, a 3-year project that saw a total of 18 individuals and organisations being honoured.

In this book, 37 activists, many of them winners of the Awards, write about their causes and discuss the strategies shaped and lessons learnt as they practise the delicate art of advocacy in Singapore. Reflecting the nature of civil society, there is a diversity of voices. Some give a more personal account, while others describe the institutional experience of advocacy work. Some essays are short and sweet, others long and detailed. They appear ordered alphabetically by the cause.
