Sinossi

In "On the Significance of Science and Art," Leo Tolstoy delves into the intricate relationship between these two disciplines and their roles in contributing to the moral and spiritual development of humanity. Set against the backdrop of the 19th-century intellectual landscape, Tolstoy's work is characterized by its profound philosophical insights and an unyielding quest for authenticity. Employing a compelling and accessible prose style, he critiques both the scientific and artistic communities, cautioning against the potential detachment from ethical considerations and true human connection that can arise from their pursuits. His exploration reveals a deep concern for the social responsibilities of artists and scientists alike, emphasizing their potential to inspire empathy and foster collective well-being. Tolstoy, a towering figure in Russian literature, drew from his own experiences as a novelist, philosopher, and social reformer. His life—marked by a search for meaning and a tumultuous struggle with societal norms—shaped his worldview profoundly. His commitment to humanitarian values and critique of modernity permeates this work, linking artistic expression with a moral imperative to enrich human existence and promote understanding. Readers seeking a thought-provoking examination of the intersections between science, art, and morality will find "On the Significance of Science and Art" an essential addition to their literary repertoire. Tolstoy's incisive arguments resonate with contemporary concerns, making the text not only relevant but also a brilliant catalyst for discussions about the roles of creativity and intellect in society.

Most people know what the Holocaust was. They have at least a vague image of what transpired in Europe during the 1940s. Still, the details may be blurry. So, let’s take a look at history and the events that shocked the world. And even though this was clearly not the first genocide in the world, it was one of particular proportions and scale, and therefore noteworthy.
At the time of The Second World War, the Holocaust, also referred to as the Shoah, was a genocide of European Jews. Between 1941 and 1945, Nazi Germany and its allies killed around 6 million Jews in German-occupied Europe, representing about two-thirds of Europe's Jewish population. The killings happened in pogroms and mass shootings, and also through a technique of extermination by labor in prisoner-of-war camp and in gas chambers and gas vans in German extermination camps, mostly Auschwitz-Birkenau, Majdanek, Sobibór, Beec, Chemno, and Treblinka in occupied Poland.
The Holocaust is one of those things that people remember as something they want to “never again” happen to humanity. Let’s hope that they can hold up to this ideal. Either way, let’s dive into the past and explore what led up to it, the magnitude of the murders and the methods the Nazis used.

When the Nazis invaded, they did not intend to govern fairly. Instead they stripped defeated nations of their treasures, industry and natural resources, with the aim of asserting German supremacy and imposing Hitler's New Order in Europe.

Paul Roland tells the story of daily life under Nazi rule - in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Guernsey and the Channel Islands- to be brought to heel by bribery and brutality, rape and torture, inducement and intimidation as the Germans carried out their vile policies.

We hear of quislings and collaborators who conspired with their captors, the 'enemies of the Reich' including Jewish citizens who were rounded up and exterminated, as well as stories of incredible courage by individuals who struck back against the Führer.
