Synopsis

Cloud Classification reveals the intricate language of clouds, explaining how these atmospheric formations are systematically categorized by altitude, shape, and associated weather patterns. Understanding cloud classification is crucial for meteorology, climate science, and connecting with nature. The book traces the evolution from subjective observation to the standardized system of the World Meteorological Organization's International Cloud Atlas, highlighting Luke Howard’s pivotal 19th-century work that brought scientific rigor to cloud identification. Did you know that cloud formations can indicate upcoming weather events, acting as visible signals in the sky?

The book progresses from basic principles of cloud formation to detailed explorations of ten principal cloud genera, such as Cirrus, Cumulus, and Stratus, examining their species and varieties. It also delves into formation mechanisms like convection and frontal systems. Emphasizing practical applications, it incorporates visual aids, meteorological data, and case studies to illustrate the relationship between cloud types and weather patterns. Readers will gain a deeper understanding of weather forecasting and climate modeling, and the ability to interpret the sky's cues.

    Welfare of Future Children The:...

Narrated by Rebecca Bennett, this open access practical guide to reproductive ethics navigates the complex subject of the policy around IVF treatment and disability screening based on the concerns around the welfare of future children. It focuses on 3 questions in order to examine these often complex philosophical issues:
    · Should we allow prospective parents using IVF to implant an embryo with a condition considered to be a disability?
    · Is routine screening for Down syndrome in pregnancy ethically acceptable, even if there is evidence that individuals may feel pressure to accept this screening?
    · Are we justified in attempting to evaluate the potential parenting ability of those trying to access fertility treatment (e.g. disabled people or individuals with past criminal convictions) and prevent access in some cases?
Rebecca Bennett walks the listener through different answers to these questions, exploring issues such as whether it is ever morally wrong to reproduce, whether we have a moral obligation to try and bring the ‘best’ children we can into existence and how we can assess the quality of future lives. There is, of course, no consensus about what the ‘right’ answers are to these questions, however answers are needed.
This area of policy and regulation is one that, Bennett argues, is heavily influenced by intuition, social norms and bias. The Welfare of Future Children invites us to question these norms and to come to a position on these issues that emphasises reason, transparency and accountability.

From midwifing new lambs to harvesting basil, Jessica Gigot invites the reader into her life on a small farm and the uncommon road that led her there. Fascinated by farming and the burgeoning local food movement, she spent her twenties wandering the Pacific Northwest, interning at small farms and doing graduate work in horticulture, always with an eye towards learning as much as she could about how and why people farm. Despite numerous setbacks and the many challenges of farming, she created a family and farm life defined by resilience and a genuine love of the land.
In A Little Bit of Land, Gigot explores the intricacies of small-scale agriculture in the Pacific Northwest and the changing role of women in this male-dominated industry. Gigot alternates between chapters describing joys, routines, and challenges of farm life and chapters reflecting on her formative experiences in agriculture, on farms and in classrooms from Ashland to the Skagit Valley. Throughout, she explores questions of sustainability, economics, health, and food systems.

Epic of the Earth - Reading...

    Edith Hall

The roots of today's environmental catastrophe run deep into humanity's past. Through this unprecedented reading of Homer's Iliad, the award-winning classicist Edith Hall examines how this foundational text both documents the environmental practices of the ancient Greeks and betrays an awareness of the dangers posed by the destruction of the natural landscape. Underlying Homer's account of brutal military operations, alliances, and cataclysmic struggle is a palpable understanding that the direction in which humanity was headed could create a world that was uninhabitable.

Hall provides unparalleled insight into the ancient origins of climate change and argues that the Iliad exposes the deepest contradictions behind the environmental problems we have created. Indeed, it is possible that some of the violence done to the environment throughout history has been authorized, if not exacerbated, by the celebration of the exploitation of nature in Homer's poem. Drawing compelling analogies to contemporary poetry, literature, and film, Hall demonstrates that the Iliad, as a priceless document of the mindset of early humans, can help us understand the long history of ecological degradation and inspire activism to rescue our planet from disaster.
