  Two decades after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, a canon of American literature about the war has begun to emerge. 
  The Hero and the Victim situates Iraq War fiction in war literature’s broader history. In contrast to the emphasis of most pre-modern war literature on the figure of the warrior-as-hero, and the growing modern emphasis on the figure of the soldier-as-victim, Iraq War fiction reflects the troubled emergence of a new narrative: the story of the ordinary soldier as a wrongdoer or even criminal. 
  To a greater extent than earlier literature about American wars, Iraq War fiction is haunted by depictions of moral injury and expressions of unresolved guilt. The emphasis on soldier criminality in Iraq War fiction can be partly explained by the rise of moral cosmopolitanism and its blurring of the traditional conceptual lines between war and crime. 
  The anti-war literature of the twentieth century often presented fallen soldiers on both sides equally as victims and viewed the distinction between heroes and villains as part of the illusion that battlefield experience strips away. 
  Written in the long shadow of Nuremberg, Iraq War fiction grapples with the possibility that the soldiers on one’s own side may not be the heroes in the story, or even the victims, but participants in a wrong, and perhaps even complicit in crimes. 
  The Hero and the Victim contributes to the ongoing, public reexamination of American traditions by confronting a topic that has, up to now, been largely untouched: the moral celebration of military service. 
  The Hero and the Victim explores the theme of soldier criminality through close readings of several works by American authors, including Kevin Powers’s The Yellow Birds, Phil Klay’s Redeployment, Helen Benedict’s Sand Queen, Chris Kyle’s American Sniper, and Roy Scranton’s War Porn.

Born into an upper-middle-class family in Alton, Illinois, and raised in East St. Louis, Davis is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th-century music. Davis adopted a variety of musical directions in a roughly five-decade career that kept him at the forefront of many major stylistic developments in jazz. The following audio recordings are from a 1953 radio interview in East St. Louis and a 1984 television interview in Norway.

  By the 20th century, warfare was nothing new to the European powers, especially when it came to fighting each other. Conflicts had been a mainstay on the European continent for over two millennia. Even after the Napoleonic wars had enveloped Europe in large scale war for nearly 20 years in the 19th century, the Europeans’ imperialism continued unabated. It would take the devastation of World War I to shock Europe and jolt the world’s superpowers out of their imperialistic tendencies.  
  	 The final straw came June 28, 1914, when a Serbian assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Austria-Hungary immediately issued ultimatums to Serbia. When they declared war on Serbia July 28, 1914, Russia mobilized for war as well. The Germans mobilized in response to Russia on July 30, and the French, still smarting from the Franco-Prussian War, mobilized for war against Germany. The British also declared war on Germany on August 4. Thus, in the span of one week, six nations had declared war, half of which had no interest in the Balkans.  
  	Needless to say, the First World War came at an unfortunate time for those who would fight in it. After an initial period of relatively rapid maneuver during which the German forces pushing through Belgium and the French and British forces attempting to stymie them made an endless series of abortive flanking movements that extended the lines to the sea, a stalemate naturally tended to develop. The infamous trench lines soon snaked across the French and Belgian countryside, creating an essentially futile static slaughterhouse whose sinister memory remains to this day, but if trench warfare was an inevitability during the war, it is only because the events leading up to the initial battles were quite different.

  The origins of capitalism can be traced back to the gradual shift from feudal economies to market-based systems. In medieval Europe, wealth was primarily tied to land ownership, with a rigid social hierarchy that limited economic mobility. The feudal system depended on agrarian production, where peasants worked the land owned by nobles in exchange for protection. However, as trade expanded and urban centers grew, the foundations of capitalism began to emerge. 
  One of the earliest indicators of this transformation was the rise of merchant guilds and early banking systems. As trade routes connected Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, merchants sought more efficient ways to conduct business, leading to the establishment of guilds that regulated commerce and maintained quality standards. Banking families, such as the Medici in Renaissance Italy, played a crucial role in financing trade and investment, paving the way for modern financial institutions. The shift toward money-based transactions rather than bartering allowed wealth to accumulate outside the traditional feudal framework. 
  Another key development was the concept of private property and individual ownership. In the late medieval period, the enclosure movement in England marked a significant departure from communal farming practices. Landowners began fencing off common lands for private use, displacing many rural laborers and forcing them to seek employment in emerging industries. This shift not only created a labor force for industrial production but also reinforced the idea that property and capital could be owned, bought, and sold freely—an essential pillar of capitalism.
