On the eve of its 50th anniversary, the Landscape Architecture Foundation asked a diverse group of the world's leading landscape architects to reflect on the last half-century and present bold ideas for what the discipline should achieve in the future. Well beyond the public conception of the profession as "gardener" or "park designer," these landscape architects discussed their role in addressing weighty issues like climate change, urbanization, management of vital resources like water, and global inequities. The New Landscape Declaration brings together their ideas and experiences in essays from thirty-three preeminent thinkers, including:James Corner, designer of the High Line in New York CityRandy Hester, founder of the modern participatory design movement in landscape architectureKate Orff, researcher, innovator, and design activistMartha Schwartz, acclaimed landscape architect and artist turned activistCarl Steinitz, Geodesign pioneerRichard Weller, prolific design researcher and authorKongjian Yu, celebrated designer, dean, and author from the People's Republic of ChinaThe New Landscape Declaration asserts the vital role of landscape architecture in solving the defining issues of our time. Relevant to designers across the globe, the ideas cross disciplinary boundaries and challenge current silos of thought and practice, underscoring the need to diversify, innovate, and create a bold culture of leadership, advocacy, and activism.

This unique “fusion of science and the physical history” traces the story of the Scots through their DNA (Sunday Herald). An almost limitless archive of our history lies hidden inside our bodies, and this book traces the ancient story of Scotland from that scientific viewpoint. The mushrooming of genetic studies, of DNA analysis, is rewriting history in spectacular fashion. In Scotland: A Genetic Journey, Alistair Moffat explores the history that is printed on our genes, and in a remarkable new approach, uncovers the detail of where Scots are from, where they have journeyed, and who they are—and in so doing, vividly colors in a DNA map of Scotland. “[Moffat] is wonderfully able to communicate the epic elements of the story.” —Scotsman

In 2014, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea suffered the worst epidemic of Ebola in history. The brutal virus spread rapidly through a clinical desert, where basic health-care facilities were few and far between. Causing severe loss of life and economic disruption, the Ebola crisis was a major tragedy of modern medicine. But why did it happen, and what can we learn from it? Paul Farmer, the internationally renowned doctor and anthropologist, experienced the Ebola outbreak firsthand-Partners in Health, the organization he founded, was among the international responders. In Fevers, Feuds, and Diamonds, he offers the first substantive account of this frightening, fast-moving episode and its implications. In vibrant prose, he tells the harrowing stories of Ebola victims while showing why the medical response was slow and insufficient. Rebutting misleading claims about the origins of Ebola and why it spread so rapidly, he traces West Africa’s chronic health failures back to centuries of exploitation and injustice. Under formal colonial rule, disease containment was a priority but care was not—and the region’s health-care woes worsened, with devastating consequences that Farmer traces up to the present.

This award-winning history provides a fascinating look at the Civil War era oil boom in western Pennsylvania and its devastating impact on the region.

In Petrolia, Brian Black offers a geographical and social history of a region that was not only the site of America’s first oil boom but was also the world’s largest oil producer between 1859 and 1873. Against the background of the growing demand for petroleum throughout and immediately following the Civil War, Black describes Oil Creek Valley’s descent into environmental hell.

Known as “Petrolia,” the region of northwestern Pennsylvania charged the popular imagination with its nearly overnight transition from agriculture to industry. But so unrestrained were these early efforts at oil drilling, Black writes, that “the landscape came to be viewed only as an instrument out of which one could extract crude.”

In a very short time, Petrolia was a ruined place—environmentally, economically, and to some extent even culturally. Black gives historical detail and analysis to account for this transformation.

Finding a God that is Real

In this deep dialogue we look at a new theory of God based on science. Our guest suggests that we need a God that can connect us spiritually to the “real” universe and can guide our now globally conscious species toward a long-term and honorable civilization. Abrams says, “God, as I see it, is our bridge to the universe. God did not create the universe but God created the meaning of the universe. God is an emergent phenomenon from us human beings. It has come about because of our aspirations; every person has aspirations. Our aspirations over generations and generations, maybe even millennia, have interacted, become so complex that something larger has emerged from them and that is God. But emergence is a two way street. Although God emerges from us, we are, in turn, fed by God and this God is the creator of meaning. Meaning is a collective creation.” She goes on to comment on the effectiveness of prayer:, “The deeper you feel that you’re part of this universe and you connect to it, the closer you’re actually getting to this God. It is absolutely a new form of prayer. . . When you move into the real universe and you start to feel that you are part of this earth, you are part of the local group of galaxies in this enormous super cluster that we’re part of, in this gigantic cosmos that is actually something like 46 billion light years back. . . When you feel you’re part of that, you’re part of the universe that has made it possible for a God to emerge.” (hosted by Justine Willis Toms)
