Sinossi

In "The Story of Napoleon and Blücher," L. Mühlbach delves into the intricate dynamics between two of history's most formidable military leaders during the Napoleonic Wars. Mühlbach employs a narrative style that is rich in detail and imbued with dramatic flair, vividly bringing to life the strategic encounters and personal rivalries that defined this tumultuous period. Set against the backdrop of early 19th-century Europe, the novel not only recounts historical events but also explores themes of honor, ambition, and the moral complexities of warfare, firmly situating itself within the genre of historical fiction that seeks to educate as much as entertain. L. Mühlbach, a pseudonym for the German author Luise Mühlbach, was renowned for her historical novels that ingeniously blend facts with imaginative storytelling. Her profound interest in history, particularly the Napoleonic era, stems from her background in literature and history, as well as the cultural zeitgeist of 19th-century Germany, which was captivated by the legacies of these towering figures. Mühlbach's ability to craft compelling narratives from historical events underscores her desire to elucidate the human motivations behind these grand figures. This book is highly recommended for readers seeking a nuanced portrayal of historic leaders through rich storytelling. Mühlbach's adept characterization and vivid settings make "The Story of Napoleon and Blücher" not only a captivating read but also an essential addition to the libraries of those interested in military history and the intricacies of European politics during the Napoleonic era.

Lying in the middle of a plain in modern day Iran is a forgotten ancient city: Persepolis. Built two and a half thousand years ago, it was known in its day as the richest city under the sun. Persepolis was the capital of Achaemenid Persian Empire, the largest empire the world had ever seen, but after its destruction, it was largely forgotten for nearly 2,000 years, and the lives and achievements of those who built it were almost entirely erased from history. Alexander the Great’s troops razed the city to the ground in a drunken riot to celebrate the conquest of the capital, after which time and sand buried it for centuries.
The Parthian people created an empire that lasted almost 500 years, from the mid-3rd century BCE until 224 CE, and it stretched from the Euphrates River in the west to Central Asia and the borders of Bactria in the east. In fact, the expansive empire challenged the Romans on numerous occasions for supremacy in the Near East.
During the first half of the 1st millennium CE, an empire arose in Persia that extended its power and influence to Mesopotamia in the east, Arabia in the south, the Caucasus Mountains in the north, and as far east as India. This empire, known alternatively as the Sasanian Empire or Sassanid Empire, was the last of three great dynasties in Persia—the Achaemenid and the Parthian being the first two dynasties—before the rise of Islam.
Amid the upheaval in the Islamic world following Muhammad’s death, the Umayyad Caliphate lasted for less than a century, but in that time it managed to become one of the most influential of the major caliphates established following him. 	The Umayyads would be replaced by the far more intelligent and crafty Abbasids, who managed to wield powerful tools like propaganda to undermine their opponents, but eventually, the Ottomans would consolidate control of the area for nearly 500 years.

A major new examination of the Indian Ocean, revealing how the region has become a hotly contested geopolitical flashpoint

Throughout history, the Indian Ocean has been an essential space for trade, commerce, and culture. Every European power has sought to dominate it. Now, after a lull in the postwar period, control of major shipping routes has once again become a critical aspect of every rising state's ambition to be a global power.

Darshana M. Baruah shows how governments from Washington, DC, to Nairobi and Canberra are expanding their interests in the region. The Indian Ocean is resource rich, strategically placed, and home to over two billion people. Island nations have become more important than ever, with Madagascar forming ties with Russia and the Comoros with Saudi Arabia. It is also through the region that China engages with Africa and the Middle East. This is a compelling account of the geopolitical significance of the Indian Ocean—showing how the region has taken center stage in a new global contest.

The insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, was not a blip or an aberration. It was the logical outcome of years of a White evangelical subculture's preparation for war. Religion scholar and former insider Bradley Onishi maps the origins of White Christian nationalism and traces its offshoots in Preparing for War.

Combining his own experiences in the youth groups and prayer meetings of the 1990s with an immersive look at the steady blending of White grievance politics with evangelicalism, Onishi crafts an engrossing account of the years-long campaign of White Christian nationalism that led to January 6. How did the rise of what Onishi calls the New Religious Right, between 1960 and 2015, give birth to violent White Christian nationalism during the Trump presidency and beyond? What propelled some of the most conservative religious communities in the country—communities of which Onishi was once a part—to ignite a cold civil war?

Through chapters on White supremacy and segregationist theologies, conspiracy theories, the Christian-school movement, purity culture, and the right-wing media ecosystem, Onishi pulls back the curtain on a subculture that birthed a movement and has taken a dangerous turn.

A fascinating portrait of the community of people—and one cat—who’ve traveled the trail end to end, by the founder of the Appalachian Trail Museum.   Countless hikers have walked stretches of the two-thousand-plus-mile Appalachian Trail, but only a small, deeply dedicated group has completed the trek all the way through from Georgia to Maine. This book explores the history of the trail through colorful profiles of those who are a part of this unique community and reveals the customs and culture that have evolved around them over the years.   From the sore muscles to the moments of solitude in nature, from the retired postmaster who parachuted onto the top of Springer Mountain to begin his journey to the woman who set out in tennis shoes because she couldn’t find women’s hiking boots in her size, Walking the Appalachian Trail explores questions of who these end-to-enders are, what drives them, what risks they face, and what rewards to body and soul they gain from this extraordinary walk.   Includes color photographs
