  On November 4, 1979, "student" supporters of the Ayatollah seized the U.S. Embassy with over sixty hostages. Although the Cold War was in full swing, the Iran hostage crisis was a watershed for the United States. 
   
   
   
  Detachment A had been established in Berlin early in the Cold War to harass and delay any Soviet military advance west. This Special unit trained relentlessly for every aspect of unconventional warfare, and was later assigned a second mission of counterterrorism. 
   
   
   
  The plan for Operation Eagle Claw, as it became known, was extremely complex. The first stage was intelligence gathering—no mean feat as most of the CIA's capabilities in the country had been eliminated. With operatives trained in intelligence work, fluent in many languages, and adept at blending in, Det A took on the advanced recon of the targets. Then, when Delta Force admitted that it could only manage the assault of the Embassy, Det A volunteered to rescue the three Americans at the Foreign Ministry.

  During the Late Bronze Age, from about 1500-1200 BCE, the Near East was a time and place where great kingdoms and empires vied for land and influence, playing high stakes diplomatic games, trading, and occasionally going to war with each other in the process. The Egyptians, Hittites, Babylonians, Assyrians, and several smaller Canaanite kingdoms were all part of this system, which was one of the first true “global” systems in world history and also one of the most materially prosperous eras in antiquity.  
  Thus, the transition from the Bronze to the Iron Age during the late 13th and early 12th centuries BCE arguably changed the structure and course of world history more fundamentally than any period before or since, and at the center of this period of turmoil was a group of people known today as the Sea Peoples, the English translation of the name given to them by the Egyptians. Despite their prominent role in history, however, the Sea Peoples remain as mysterious as they were influential; while the Egyptians documented their presence and the wars against them, it has never been clear exactly where the Sea Peoples originated from, or what compelled them to invade various parts of the region with massive numbers. Whatever the reason, the Sea Peoples posed an existential threat to the people already living in the region, as noted by an Egyptian inscription: “The foreign countries made a conspiracy in their islands. All at once the lands were removed and scattered in the fray. No land could stand before their arms: from Hatti, Qode, Carchemish, Arzawa and Alashiya on, being cut off at one time. A camp was set up in Amurru. They desolated its people, and its land was like that which has never come into being. They were coming forward toward Egypt, while the flame was prepared before them."

  Anaxagoras of Clazomenae, born around 500 BCE, was a pre-Socratic philosopher whose ideas bridged the gap between the earlier Milesian school and the more developed metaphysical and scientific theories of later Greek philosophy. His life and work significantly influenced subsequent thinkers, including Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. 
  Early Life and Education: 
  Anaxagoras was born in Clazomenae, a city in Ionia, an area known for its vibrant intellectual culture. His early education exposed him to the philosophies of Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes, laying the groundwork for his own philosophical inquiries. He later moved to Athens, where he became a prominent figure in the intellectual circles of the time. 
  Philosophical Innovations: 
  Anaxagoras is best known for his introduction of the concept of Nous (Mind or Intellect), which he posited as the organizing principle of the cosmos. Unlike his predecessors who sought a single material principle as the origin of all things, Anaxagoras argued that the universe is governed by a rational, intelligent principle, Nous, which imparts order and structure to the chaotic flux of matter.
