Sinossi

“A space opera to rival the best the field has ever seen.”—Science Fiction Chronicle Beginning a new trilogy set in Kevin J. Anderson’s beloved Seven Suns universe, and a horrific new danger threatens the entire Spiral Arm. Two decades after the end of the horrific Hydrogue War, a group of independent gypsy clans, the Roamers, operate giant floating skymines in the clouds of gas-giant planets, where they harvest stardrive fuel at great risk, and great profit. On the planet Theroc, capital of the vast Confederation, humans live inside a gigantic worldforest whose towering trees are all interconnected in a single mind, which telepathic “green priests” can use for interstellar communication. The stagnant alien Ildiran Empire once ruled the entire Spiral Arm, but they are unprepared for human politics and ambitions. Upon this galactic canvas, a large expeditionary ship goes off to explore farther than any human or Ildiran has ever ventured. Beyond the edge of the Spiral Arm, they encounter a mysterious and ominous dark nebula, a huge black cloud so opaque that even starlight cannot penetrate it. The explorers are horrified when the dark nebula begins to expand exponentially. The races of the Spiral Arm will be faced with an evil so ancient that knowledge of its very existence has been obliterated, but it will threaten all life, all planets, and even the fabric of the universe itself. Review for the series:
I think I've found my new favourite sci-fi series. With nods to Brave New World and echoes of 1984, this book brings a modern perspective to the classics. The characters are intriguing; the world is familiar yet foreign; and the story is captivating. I can't believe it ended where it did - I kept trying to find more pages just in case! This definitely makes my top ten of 2024, and I am so excited to read more.

Randall Garrett sticks a sharp needle into our government and society in this wonderful story. He projects the current trends towards paternalistic government into the future. Yes, we have attained a world government and everyone is equal whether they want to be or not; everyone is taken care of no matter how incompetent, stupid or sleazy they are and everyone is out to undermine everyone else. The author predicts (sadly only too well) what the trends of today will eventually produce if allowed to continue. But wait! there is hope in the asteroid belt where jerks and incompetents are weeded out by hard physical laws and only those who possess common sense and the ability to actually survive are allowed to govern. But will the Earth government allow this to continue? Of course not. Listen to this great story to have a peek into the future.

We all know ‘time’ as that singular thing that journeys us from the present to the future. In this volume its really not like that at all. These stories jump backwards and slip forwards and sometimes set themselves on repeat just because that is the intention of our talented authors. They love to play with their imaginations and take us along for the ride.
