Sinossi

A biography and history of the Native American chief, his people, and their forced exodus at the hands of the US government.“Nerburn deftly records a dark chapter of forced diaspora and forgotten promises—as engrossing as a novel.” —People“A remarkable job of research in telling the thus far untold story of Chief Joseph—the mythical hero, the real man. It is a poignant, touching tale.” —Howard Zinn, author of The People’s History of the United StatesHidden in the shadow cast by the great western expeditions of Lewis and Clark and the westward-moving pioneers lies another journey every bit as poignant and essential to understanding of who we are as a nation. Chief Joseph and the Flight of the Nez Perce is a grand saga of a pivotal time in our nation’s history. Its pages are alive with the presence of Lewis and Clark, General William Tecumseh Sherman, General George Armstrong Custer, and Sitting Bull. Its events brush against the California Gold Rush, the American Civil War, the great western pioneer migration, and the building of the telegraph and the transcontinental railroad. But at its center lies a group of men, women, and children fleeing for their lives across the vast American West, and a man Buffalo Bill Cody called the “greatest Indian America ever produced.”“Nowhere has [this story] been portrayed with more sensitivity and understanding than in Chief Joseph and the Flight of the Nez Perce. Kent Nerburn . . . writes from the Indians’ perspective with insight and reverence.” —Columbus Dispatch“Crisp, energetic account . . . reads like fictionalized history in the tradition of Mari Sandoz’s Crazy Horse.” —The Oregonian“A must read for every instructor of American history who want to present balance to the vast misrepresentations and distortions of American Indian history.” —Grand Rapids Press“Nerburn has written about a man of humility and grandeur, whose patient anguish and devotion to his people should be part of our national mythos. This is storytelling with a greatness of heart.” —Louise Erdrich, author of The Painted Drum

As a progressive parish minister, Molly Baskette has been a companion during the most vulnerable and unsettled periods of many people's lives. She has also had a front row seat to remarkable human transformation, as many of the ruptures her people lived through turned out to be the way that God got in. But when she was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer at age thirty-nine, with two small children, her theology of and relationship to God was tested more profoundly than ever.

Instead of becoming despondent, though, she engaged with her faith more deeply—seizing the opportunity to test the seaworthiness of the faith she had been practicing and preaching. In How to Begin When Your World Is Ending, Baskette shares the questions that confronted her along the way like: Is it true that prayer changes things? Does God care whether we live or die—and is there a damn thing God can do about it anyway? How can vulnerability, counterintuitively, be a strength? And the million-dollar question: is there life after death, and just what might it be like?

Weaving together her own story and the stories of those she encountered in her life of faith, Baskette mines joy from all the hardest parts of being human. In doing so she reminds us that whatever you are going through, someone has been there before you, and found meaning in the madness.

For more than a decade, the case of the Gilgo Beach or Long Island Serial Killings haunted investigators, journalists, and families. A string of bodies discovered along Ocean Parkway raised chilling questions about how long a predator had operated in the shadows. In 2023, the arrest of architect Rex Heuermann brought new urgency to a mystery that had confounded law enforcement for years.
Gilgo Beach: Anatomy of an Investigation pieces together the story from publicly available indictments, affidavits, official statements, and reliable press coverage. It follows the investigation’s timeline from the first discoveries to the creation of a task force, the breakthrough DNA evidence, the arrest, and the subsequent courtroom developments.

President Gerald Ford suffered two attempts on his life during his term in office: one by a young woman in Charles Manson's Family, Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, and the other by a far more unlikely candidate—an average middle-aged mother of five—Sara Jane Moore. After thirty years in contact with Moore in prison, journalist Geri Spieler deconstructs her life in Housewife Assassin, tracing the path from Moore's small-town upbringing in West Virginia to that fateful moment when she tried to assassinate the president.

Throughout Moore's dodgy life she hid her identity and misled those around her. Through the turbulent '60s and '70s, she married five times, abandoned children, faked amnesia, befriended Patty Hearst's father, became a revolutionary, and worked as an FBI informant turned double agent feeding information to the underground radicals, all before the assassination attempt.

From Spieler's insider correspondence and independent research, including interviews with President Ford himself, she confirms details (the gunshot missed the President's head by six inches) and debunks others (Sara Jane did not "shoot wild" as the press had reported) to deliver a compelling profile of a society lady turned elusive assassin.

My Greenwich Village - Dave Bob...

    Terri Thal

Terri Thal was very much a part of the folk music world in 1960s Greenwich Village, New York. Few people know that she was 21-year-old Bob Dylan's first manager prior to his contract with Albert Grossman and Columbia Records. She also managed musician Dave Van Ronk (who was her husband), and others to include the Roche sisters, Paul Geremia and The Holy Modal Rounders. She booked performances at coffee houses, clubs and basket houses. On 6 September 1961, she recorded a set from a young Bob at The Gaslight Café – it is the first known live recording of his original songs - known to Dylan fans as the First Gaslight Tape! Terri took this 'audition' tape to clubs to try to get him gigs – and she still owns the original reel-to-reel tape! She had many friends in Greenwich Village including Suze Rotolo and a number of seminal 1960s folk musicians.
When Dave Van Ronk first saw young Bob performing in a club in Greenwich Village he said 'I just heard this kid who's a fucking genius. You've got to hear him.' Within a few days I heard him play and agreed with Dave. Bob Dylan asked me, 'Would you get me gigs?'
Terri Thal has two passions: folk music and social justice. This is a personal story of the world of folk music in 1960s New York written by a Jewish woman from Brooklyn who, although not a musician, was an intrinsic part of this scene. Terri describes Greenwich Village as a community that was supportive, musically exciting and one in which people had fun.Terri tells us what it was like to hang out in the Village coffee houses, to host folk singers like Tom Paxton and Phil Ochs who hung out at her apartment, and to be a manager. We hear her view and involvement of the 1960s socialist organizations, and how she later merged her professional work in not- for-profit agencies.
