Sinossi

'Quite simply, and quite ridiculously, one of the funniest and most illuminating books I have ever read. I thought I was obsessive, but Keith Kahn-Harris is playing a very different sport. He really has discovered the whole world in an egg.' Simon Garfield
A thrilling journey deep into the heart of language, from a rather unexpected starting point.

Keith Kahn-Harris is a man obsessed with something seemingly trivial - the warning message found inside Kinder Surprise eggs:

WARNING, read and keep: Toy not suitable for children under 3 years. Small parts might be swallowed or inhaled.

On a tiny sheet of paper, this message is translated into dozens of languages - the world boiled down to a multilingual essence. Inspired by this, the author asks: what makes 'a language'? With the help of the international community of language geeks, he shows us what the message looks like in Ancient Sumerian, Zulu, Cornish, Klingon - and many more. Along the way he considers why Hungarian writing looks angry, how to make up your own language, and the meaning of the heavy metal umlaut.

Overturning the Babel myth, he argues that the messy diversity of language shouldn't be a source of conflict, but of collective wonder. This is a book about hope, a love letter to language.
'This is a wonderful book. A treasure trove of mind-expanding insights into language and humanity encased in a deliciously quirky, quixotic quest. I loved it. Warning: this will keep you reading.' - Ann Morgan, author of Reading the World: Confessions of a Literary Explorer

We broke our new series on learning Chinese [Mandarin] down into different learning stages. Start with the "Lower Beginner" books followed by the "Beginner" and "Upper Beginner" books. Next, progress to the "Intermediate" series, then test and reinforce your knowledge with the "Conversations" series.
This audiobook is divided into units. While it provides different learning patterns and accommodates various needs, this audiobook focuses on helping you improve your ability to understand, speak, and memorise Chinese [Mandarin].
In Unit 1 you will hear Chinese [Mandarin] decoded with each syllable spoken very slowly and clearly with repetition. Immediately before each sentence is spoken, you will hear the translation, so you will always understand what is being said.
Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native Chinese [Mandarin] speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language.
By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand Chinese [Mandarin]. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in Chinese [Mandarin] at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken Chinese [Mandarin], Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences.
In Unit 5 you can test yourself on how much you have learned. If you are having difficulties, we suggest you revisit the listening, speaking, or memorisation section of Units 1, 2 3 or 4, according to what you need more help with.

Where de yea belang?brings together the distinctive vocabulary of the North East dialect.
"Abackabeyont, bait-poke, cracket, drucken, etten, fettle, guissie pigs, lonnin, marra, nyen, plote, queen-cat, reckling, skinch, tew, upcast, vine, willok, yem, zookers!" If you enjoy finding out about dialect words – how and where and when they were used – and where they came from – this is the best guide to help you explore the world of North East dialect.
Until the 20th century, dialect was a marker of economic, social and cultural change. We know that the North East maritime connections with the Dutch led to the introduction of many 'new' words. The Scottish influence of the keelmen (fisherman) on the Tyne and their effect on local language was much more radical. Although the Tyneside dialect and identity and this way of speaking is fast waning, the popularity of discovering this language and dialect shows there is still a great interest in the languages and dialect of the past.

The late Bill Griffiths (1948–2007)was an extraordinary writer and poet: radical, experimental and scholarly, but also had a great sense of humour. He was a wonderful champion of the North East, its people and heritage.
Born in Middlesex, he read history before graduating in 1969. Bill ran his own independent press and published political pamphlets and essays on the arts and poetry. After gaining a PhD in Old English he fled London and settled in Seaham where he embraced the northern way of life.
'He was also a scholar of Old English and dialect who know how to make his work accessible. Private and uncompetitive, he was at least these things: poet, archivist, scholar, translator, prison-rights campaigner, pianist, historian, curator, performer, editor, short-story writer, essayist, teacher, book-maker and lyricist. The Saturday before he died, Bill discharged himself from hospital to host the Dialect Day at the Morden Tower in Newcastle upon Tyne. He died as he lived: cataloguing, awarding Best Dialect prizes, opera on his radio, the poetry paramount.' Obituary, The Independent, 20 September 2007.

Thank you for your interest in the Russian for the intermediate level – an audioacourse by Audioacademyeu. The course is aimed at advanced learners who have already learned English for three or four years h and who should have almost fluent communication skills. The course is based on contextual learning, which means that you will not only learn words but alsosentences in which you can use the words you have learned. In this course you will find you will find a total of 1,400 words and practice sentences. The individual lessons are organized by by topic and each contains a different number of words and sentences. The language level B2 is an intermediate level, so that most of the course is devoted to topics such as work, characteristics and activities, while while the topics like travel, leisure and family are covered to a lesser extent, as they have been covered more extensively in the previous parts of the course. In the last two lessons you will also find a large overview of the irregular verbs. What is the best way to work with the course? Choose the lesson you want to start with. Each lesson contains six tracks. First, familiarize yourself with the actual vocabulary (tracks 1 and 2). In order to get a better grip over the new expressions in Italian, in track one you hear the Russianword twice.Next, you have a word followed by a contextual sentence, again in both translation options (tracks 3 and 4). Then you move on to complete sentences (tracks 5 and 6). ). Again, in track 5, you will hear the sentence in Russiantwice. Once you have mastered translating sentences from English into Russian(lesson 6) in the time gap before the English translation, you have won. The words alone will help you in understanding the meaning, but using the mastered complete sentences will help you communicate much better. There is a script to this course available for free download at www.audioacademyeu.eu which will make your activities with the course much more effective. In its introduction, you will find a learning guide along with helpful tips on how to make the lessons more effective and a lesson plan for you to record your learning progress. The script is divided thematically into three parts. In the first part you will find a written version of the audio tracks you will listen to. In the second part you will find the writing tests. For each lesson there is one test of vocabulary and one test of sentences. The key to both tests is available right after the tests too In the third part of the script you will find double-sided flashcards that you can cut out with scissors and practice even when you can't or don't want to listen. The course is narrated by native speakers - Jeff Short in English and Anna Makarenko and Alexander podolkhov in Russian. Faulty Comparisons and False...

This book contains the following titles:
    - The False Dilemma: A false dilemma, also known as a false dichotomy, is a logical fallacy that occurs when only two options are presented as the only possible choices, despite the existence of other viable alternatives. This simplification of choices creates an illusion of a limited range of possibilities, forcing individuals to pick between two extremes. The false dilemma is often used to manipulate thinking, steer conversations, and influence decisions in various contexts, from political discourse to everyday life.
    - The False Consensus Effect: The False Consensus Effect refers to the cognitive bias where individuals overestimate the extent to which others share their beliefs, values, and opinions. This phenomenon can be seen across a wide range of social, political, and personal contexts, often shaping our perception of how common or widespread our views are. Essentially, people tend to assume that their experiences and perspectives are more universally shared than they truly are. This can lead to significant misunderstandings, skewed decision-making, and a distorted view of the world.
