'A gripping read for anyone who cares about what we're doing to the planet and how we can change it' DAVID SHUKMAN, FORMER BBC NEWS SCIENCE EDITOR

'Searing observations focused on our need to protect biodiversity - A tour de force' SIR TIM SMIT OBE, CO-FOUNDER OF THE EDEN PROJECT

'An informative, uplifting and truly important book' JONATHON PORRITT, AUTHOR AND CAMPAIGNER

One woman's journey through South America - and the devastating story of our planet's disappearing biodiversity

Pedalling hard for thirteen months, eco adventurer Kate Rawles cycled the length of the Andes on an eccentric bicycle she built herself. The Life Cycle charts her mission to find out why biodiversity is so important, what's happening to it, and what can be done to protect it.

From the Pacific Ocean to rainforests and salt flats, Kate learns that armadillos can cross rivers by holding their breath, that Colombia has more species of birds than North America and Europe combined, and that in threatening ecosystems, we're tearing down our own life support system. En route, she witnesses the devastation of goldmining and oil drilling but finds hope in the incredible people working to regenerate habitats and communities. As she reaches the 'end of the world', she realises that to tackle biodiversity loss we all have a role to play.

For many, the past few years have been defined by climate disaster. Stories about once-in-a-lifetime hurricanes, floods, fires, droughts, and even snowstorms are now commonplace. But dramatic weather events are not new and Northeaster, Cathie Pelletier's breathtaking account of the 1952 snowstorm that blanketed New England, offers a valuable reminder about nature's capacity for destruction as well as insight into the human instinct for preservation.

Northeaster weaves together a rich cast of characters whose lives were uprooted and endangered by the storm. Housewives and lobstermen, loggers and soldiers were all trapped as snow piled in drifts twenty feet high. The storm smothered hundreds of travelers in their cars, covered entire towns, and broke ships in half. In the midst of the blizzard's chaos, there were remarkable acts of heroism and courageous generosities. Doctors braved the storm to help deliver babies. Ordinary people kept their wits while buried in their cars, and others made their way out of forests to find kindhearted strangers willing to take them in.

It's likely that none of us know how we would handle a confrontation with a blizzard or other natural disaster. But Northeaster shows that we have it inside to fight for survival in some of the harshest conditions that nature has to offer.

Once a killing ground for whalers hunting a leviathan they called the "devilfish," the San Ignacio Lagoon in Baja, Mexico, is now an environmental and spiritual sanctuary—the only place in the world where animals in their natural aquatic environment routinely seek out human contact. A nursery for the gray whale since before recorded history, the lagoon and its stories, told here by James Michael Dorsey, illuminate the magic of human connection to animals, and what those bonds teach us about ourselves and our purpose on this shared planet.

Weaving two decades of San Ignacio adventures with the history of the lagoon, Dorsey vividly captures the lively people of Baja, like the mystical godfather of whale-watching, Pachico Mayoral, as well as the whales he's bonded with over the years, like Slackjaw, Patch, and Dervish. Looming over his journeys are the many dangers to the area, from the Mitsubishi Corporation's attempts to build salt works to plans for resort development on the Baja coast, to pollution and climate change, and even to the orcas who hunt the gray whales.

A tale of wondrous bonds between the intelligent, spirited gray whales and the people from around the world who come to this place to touch, kiss, and play with them—The Lagoon is a testament to the importance of preserving these animals and their natural habitats.

Medical laboratory testing is a vital medical procedure that allows for the early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease.
More often than not, these tests are making the difference between life and death, and they are one of the first defense lines that protect patients and their general well-being.
Laboratory results greatly influence almost every decision regarding a patient – diagnosis, treatment, hospital admission, and discharge – all of them. That's why it's crucial to understand and learn how to conduct and order these tests efficiently.
This guide is written from a skilled nurse's personal experience so that you can have easy access to all essential testing procedures at all times. Organized the way a nurse thinks, up-to-date, and easy to navigate.
Perfect when you are in a rush and have no time to search for the information you need—an excellent choice for medical students and doctors, not just nurses.
This book contains step-by-step guides on choosing the correct procedure (that depends on the anamnesis), tips on preparing the patient for the procedure, and expert information for accurate interpretation of results.

    Tectonophysics - Earth's Moving...

Tectonophysics is the branch of geophysics that studies the physical processes governing the movement and deformation of Earth's lithosphere. It serves as the foundation for understanding the forces that drive plate tectonics, mountain building, earthquakes, and volcanic activity. This field integrates principles from geology, physics, and engineering to explain how stresses, strains, and material properties influence the behavior of the Earth's crust and mantle.
The development of tectonophysics as a scientific discipline emerged from the broader study of geodynamics and plate tectonics. In the early 20th century, Alfred Wegener proposed the theory of continental drift, suggesting that continents were once joined in a supercontinent called Pangaea before slowly drifting apart. However, his ideas lacked a convincing mechanism. It was not until the mid-20th century that discoveries such as seafloor spreading and mantle convection provided the necessary framework for the modern theory of plate tectonics. These findings revolutionized the understanding of Earth's dynamic nature, establishing tectonophysics as a crucial field in geoscience.
At its core, tectonophysics investigates the forces that drive plate motions. Earth's interior consists of the solid inner core, the molten outer core, the mantle, and the brittle lithosphere. Heat from the core generates convective currents in the mantle, which exert stress on the overlying tectonic plates. These stresses lead to deformation in the lithosphere, resulting in phenomena such as faulting, folding, and crustal thickening. The study of stress and strain is fundamental in tectonophysics, as it helps explain the mechanisms behind earthquakes and mountain formation.
