Frederick Douglass was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, gaining note for his oratory and incisive antislavery writings. Accordingly, he was described by abolitionists in his time as a living counter-example to slaveholders' arguments that slaves lacked the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. Likewise, Northerners at the time found it hard to believe that such a great orator had once been a slave. This is his story. "De Ocampo's performance is admirable. It is well paced, and he employs voices and strategic pauses to good effect. In sum, both the writing and narration are first-class." - AudioFile MagazineAn eye-opening investigation of America’s rural and suburban housing crisis, told through a searing portrait of precarious living in Disney World's backyard.Today, a minimum-wage earner can afford a one-bedroom apartment in only 145 out of 3,143 counties in America. One of the very worst places in the United States to look for affordable housing is Osceola County, Florida.Once the main approach to Disney World, where vacationers found lodging on their way to the Magic Kingdom, the fifteen-mile Route 192 corridor in Osceola has become a site of shocking contrasts. At one end, global investors snatch up foreclosed properties and park their capital in extravagant vacation homes for affluent visitors, eliminating the county’s affordable housing in the process. At the other, underpaid tourist industry workers, displaced families, and disabled and elderly people subsisting on government checks cram themselves into dilapidated, roach-infested motels, or move into tent camps in the woods.Through visceral, frontline reporting from the motels and encampments dotting central Florida, renowned social analyst Andrew Ross exposes the overlooked housing crisis sweeping America’s suburbs and rural areas, where residents suffer ongoing trauma, poverty, and nihilism. As millions of renters face down evictions and foreclosures in the midst of the COVID-19 recession, Andrew Ross reveals how ineffective government planning, property market speculation, and poverty wages have combined to create this catastrophe. Urgent and incisive, Sunbelt Blues offers original insight into what is quickly becoming a full-blown national emergency. A Macmillan Audio production from Metropolitan Books.

“An excellent overview” of African American, LGBT, and other minority-group conservatives (The New Republic).   In Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner Now? Angela Dillard offers the first comparative analysis of a modern conservatism that cuts across boundaries of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality.   To be an African-American and a conservative, or a Latino who is also a conservative and gay, is to occupy an awkward and contested political position. Dillard explores the philosophies, politics, and motivation of minority conservatives such as Ward Connerly, Glenn Loury, Linda Chavez, Clarence Thomas, and Bruce Bawer, as well as their tepid reception by both the left and right. Welcomed cautiously by the conservative movement, they have also frequently been excoriated by those African Americans, Latinos, women, and LGBT people who view their conservatism as betrayal.   Dillard’s comprehensive study, among the first to take the history and political implications of multicultural conservatism seriously, is a vital source for understanding contemporary American conservatism in all its forms.   “Dillard analyzes the famous (Clarence Thomas, Linda Chavez), the obscure (Elizabeth Wright’s black conservative newsletter, Issues and Views) and the in-between (the memoirs of the gay conservative Marvin Liebman).” —The New York Times

Benjamin Pogrund, who spent 26 years as a journalist in South Africa investigating apartheid and who has been living in Israel for the past 15 years, investigates the accusation that Israel is practicing apartheid and the motives of those who make it. His study is founded on a belief in Israel, combined with frank criticism, to provide a balanced view of Israel’s strengths and problems. To understand Israel today, one must first look at the past and so the book first outlines key foundational events to explain current attitudes. It then explores the contradictions found in the region, including discrimination against Israeli Arabs and among Jews, before concluding that it is wrong to affix the apartheid label to Israel inside the Green Line of 1948/1967. It also deconstructs the criticisms of Israel and the boycott movement before arguing for two states, Israeli and Palestinian, as the only way forward for Jews and Arabs. This detailed and balanced study offers a unique comparison between South Africa a

From the news media to politicians. From social media to the movies. From the pulpit to the playground. Hatred is engineered, sold and spread. It is used as a tool to control and manipulate the masses. It has been this way for a very long time.

It is in fact a natural part of being human and grows from that basic universal and instinctual inner element of fear. This fear is natural. All animals have it. It helps us and them to spot threats to our lives and way of life. But this fear is being used by very clever leaders in government, media, religion and business. These four elements are in fact all connected at many levels.

This fear causes hatred and that hatred is used to garner votes, sales and members. The threats created by those in power manipulate our thoughts and beliefs and cause us to hate other countries, races and everything else you can imagine. We take sides because we are conditioned to do so.

There is a route out of this hatred and it is as old as man. It is an ancient wisdom seldom spoken of in the media and yet it is greatly needed in our divided world.

It is time to end hatred.
