In 2016, the United States was stunned by evidence of Russian meddling in the US presidential elections. But it shouldn't have been. Subversion—domestic interference to undermine or manipulate a rival—is as old as statecraft itself. The basic idea would have been familiar to Sun Tzu, Thucydides, Elizabeth I, or Bismarck.

It came as a surprise in 2016 because the sole superpower had fallen asleep at the wheel. But what's really new? Have we entered a new age of vulnerability? To answer these questions, and to protect ourselves against future subversion, we need a clear-eyed understanding of what it is and how it works.

In A Measure Short of War, Jill Kastner and William C. Wohlforth provide just that, taking the listener on a compelling ride through the history of subversion, exploring two thousand years of mischief and manipulation to illustrate subversion's allure, its operational possibilities, and the means for fighting back against it. With vivid examples from the ancient world, the great-power rivalries of the nineteenth century, epic Cold War struggles, and more, A Measure Short of War shows how prior technological revolutions opened up new avenues for subversion, and how some democracies have been fatally weakened by foreign subverters while others have artfully defended themselves—and their democratic principles.

Throughout the history of warfare, the practice of placing blame on innocent parties in order to justify attacking them has been a constant feature. In the 20th century, this practice began to be commonly referred to as a “false flag” operation. The essence of a false flag scenario is that it is conducted by one party or government and “made to appear as though another party sponsored it.”[1] In informal legal terminology, the practice is commonly referred to as a “stitch up”[2] or “setup.”[3] The modern use of this action based on deceit originated in the 16th century, typically when ships displayed the flags of a neutral or enemy country to hide their identities.
The severity of false flag operations moves in tandem with the perceived danger. In the late 20th century, the Soviet Union constituted an ongoing threat to the United States, ideologically and militarily. When Fidel Castro, a Soviet sympathizer, came to power in Cuba in 1959, the presence of a communist extension of Soviet influence so near American shores caused great discomfort to the U.S. government.
Some of the Cold War’s tensest moments involved Cuba, including the Bay of Pigs invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis, amply demonstrating that throughout the early 1960s, alarmed individuals within the American government believed that the only way to handle Castro was by immediate elimination and a takeover of Cuba. They were pitted against more nuanced points of view held by others within the Kennedy administration. The Pentagon was of the general mind that in such a perilous environment, military decision-making should come to the front and civilians should withdraw, even the White House. Diplomacy was seen as being of little use by the Joint Chiefs of Staff against an encroaching Soviet superpower led by a political street fighter and his puppet situated just off the coast of Florida. This charged atmosphere would lead to one of the most controversial proposals in history.

Why do people choose authoritarianism over freedom? The classic study of the psychological appeal of fascism by a New York Times–bestselling author.  The pursuit of freedom has indelibly marked Western culture since Renaissance humanism and Protestantism began the fight for individualism and self-determination. This freedom, however, can make people feel unmoored, and is often accompanied by feelings of isolation, fear, and the loss of self, all leading to a desire for authoritarianism, conformity, or destructiveness. It is not only the question of freedom that makes Fromm’s debut book a timeless classic. In this examination of the roots of Nazism and fascism in Europe, Fromm also explains how economic and social constraints can also lead to authoritarianism. By the author of The Sane Society and The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness, this is a fascinating examination of the anxiety that underlies our darkest impulses, an enlightening volume perfect for readers of Eric Hoffer or Hannah Arendt.  This ebook features an illustrated biography of Erich Fromm including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.

The nature of money as gates and letters revealed gives light to the nations of humankind to find in troubled times a historic luxury and modern necessity in the FML FIREs: these are the first constitutional centers of foundation money law governance and the prize of digital revolution. Through the architectures in the top layer of the double blue ON/E Divide, Intel-Modernized Governance from each city center in vertical international parallel selects for the lettered gates of economic FREEDOM and systemically discriminates against and shuts down the old capitalist unlimited extremist forms lettered as DEATH. Free artists, the Rolling service, Experts, Élites, Developers, Officers and Managers are the chosen occupational categories in the foundation money law range. Each HOME Medallion bank card that is encoded to FREEDOM is recognized by our constitutional conscience in the FML FIREs as constitutionally fit to transact. Each nation is redeemed with a capitalist ltd olympic spirit infused economy. As we no longer merely pay taxes to the discretion of full grey governments, the contingent capitalist excesses fall away and the suite of necessarily capitalist ltd institutions and businesses emerge. Prior to the digital revolution, the foundation money law was ungovernable and thus irrelevant: though now from each city central FML FIRE, Intel-Modernized Governance center-checks every Medallion Bank Card in transaction. The eyes behind the FML FIRE, in three charismatic forms, see through the top layer of the double blue ON/E Divide, travelling the speed of light to protect both the three and national class ruling structure from trespass and the first freedom of every man to earn and build HOME Wealth from trespass. It is finally with our HOME Patriot Medallions’ support that the ON/E Divide vertical boundary is built between the capitalist ltd economy that lives above and the five occupational evils that die below.
