A Clear and Concise Exploration of the Doctrine of Justification from Thomas R. Schreiner When we see the fallenness of the world, it is often challenging to understand how sinners can stand before a holy God, but the gospel gives hope―justification that comes through Jesus Christ. This doctrine is essential to the gospel but has sparked countless academic and theological disagreements throughout church history, even contributing to the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century.   In this addition to the Short Studies in Systematic Theology series, Thomas R. Schreiner examines the biblical and historical background of the doctrine of justification. Schreiner explores it throughout church history and analyzes both the Old and New Testament teachings. By examining the relationship between justification and other doctrines of salvation―such as redemption, reconciliation, adoption, and sanctification―Schreiner shows how it gives peace, assurance, and joy to sinners through Jesus and hope for life today. Accessible: Designed to be short and approachable, this text is an ideal resource for college students, pastors, and thoughtful laypeople Part of the Short Studies in Systematic Theology Series: Other titles include The Person of Christ; Glorification; and The Doctrine of Scripture Written by Thomas R. Schreiner: A renowned biblical scholar and professor who has authored or edited numerous books, including Run to Win the Prize; The Joy of Hearing; and Covenant and God’s Purpose for the World

Discover how to responsibly defend religious freedom for all without compromising your personal beliefs.
Religious freedom is a bitterly contested issue that spills over into political, public, and online spheres. It's an issue that's becoming ever more heated, and neither of the global political polarities is interested in protecting it. While the political left is openly hostile toward traditional religion, the political right seeks to weaponize it.
How can we ensure that "religious freedom" is truly about freedom of one's religion rather than serving an ethno-nationalist agenda?
In Religious Freedom in a Secular Age, Michael Bird (New Testament scholar and author of Evangelical Theology) has four main goals:To explain the true nature of secularism and help us to see it as one of the best ways of promoting liberty and mutual respect in a multifaith world. To dismantle the arguments for limiting religious freedom. To outline a biblical strategy for maintaining a Christian witness in a post-Christian society. To encourage Christians to participate in a new age of apologetics by being prepared to defend not only their own believes but also the freedom of all faiths.
While Bird does address the recent political administrations in the US, his focus is global. Bird—who lives in Melbourne, Australia—freely admits to his anxiety of the militant secularism surrounding him, but he also strongly critiques the marriage of national and religious identities that has gained ground in countries like Hungary and Poland.
The fact is that religion has a lot to contribute to the common good. Religious Freedom in a Secular Age will challenge readers of all backgrounds and beliefs not only to make room for peaceable difference, but also to find common ground on the values of justice, mercy, and equality.

For about 40 years after the death of Jesus, the early Jesus followers met together for worship and to share their memories about what Jesus said and did. Their memory of who Jesus was, what he had done. But their memory was directly affected by the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. They needed an explanation for the crucifixion of Jesus that gave meaning and purpose for that horrible event. Several explanations gradually emerged that drew on their religious practice of sacrifice for forgiveness. If you wanted to be forgiven, you went to the temple and sacrificed an innocent animal. God would see that act, and would respond (according to the temple priests) by forgiving your sins.
Gradually the early followers of Jesus began to see Jesus as God’s ultimate sacrifice to forgive their sins. Thus in Christian story telling the death of Jesus was seen as the intentional act of God to forgive sins. No human death could do that, because all humanity was sinful and thus they could only die for their own sins. But since Jesus was sinless, his crucifixion death was an effective God act of forgiving the sins of humanity.
In more recent years that Substitutionary Atonement explanation for the death of Jesus has been challenged. What does it say about God if God had to have one person killed before God could forgive other people? And if this excruciatingly painful death of Jesus is essential for human salvation, the teachings and life of Jesus loses its meaning (except that Jesus has to be sinless because if he had ever sinned his death would have no salvation impact for others.)
In other words, did Jesus see himself as God’s sacrificial lamb, or was he a living prophet in the tradition of Isaiah and other Old Testament prophets proclaiming God’s intention for all humanity?

Hints on Esoteric Theosophy #1. These letters are published with the permission of the writers, not because any of them are altogether free from errors and misconceptions, but because it is hoped that they may help to explain to all interested in the question the present position of Theosophy, and, by increasing the earnestness of all concerned in the movement, pave the way for more authoritative and less imperfect views on the whole question. No tree can grow without soil, and Theosophy can only flourish and develop its fair flowers and refreshing fruits where many pure hearts seeking the truth are gathered together.
