Christopher Phillips has devoted his life to carrying the torch of Socrates and his quest to "Know Thyself." Yet upon the death of his beloved father and mentor, the originator of the burgeoning global Socrates Café movement had little choice but to confront the inescapable truth: that there are some things we cannot know for sure. This moving, insightful and ultimately hopeful and helpful blend of memoir and philosophical exploration begins in Phillips' native stomping grounds of the island of Nisyros, Greece and unfurls through space and time as the author explores the connections between his immediate circumstances and the eternal wisdom of popular philosophers.

In this personal and probing book, the acclaimed 'philosopher for the people' shares lessons gleaned from his intimate and often unexpected encounters with uncommonly perceptive human beings both living and long deceased. Along the way, he charts a pathway for sculpting what Shakespeare describes as a "soul of goodness," which meshes with Plato's paradigm-shattering conception of the "healthiness of soul." For those struggling to overcome the hopelessness that can result from grievous loss, setback, or betrayal, the author spotlights how to cultivate a 'Socratic spirit' that leads to renewed love, forbearance, and hope at the other end of the tunnel.

What if retirement is the starting gate, not the finish line?
So many people chase a number before retiring, only to realize that when they do retire, the “freedom” they had imagined leaves them restless or unsure. The fishing trips, vacations, and golf games are great. But what do you do when the novelty wears off?
In Fish Don’t Clap, Brad Connors, financial advisor and author, offers a fresh, practical system for planning the next phase of life with meaning. This book isn’t just about money—it’s about purpose, clarity, and having a team to help guide your journey.
You’ll discover:why hitting your “magic number” doesn’t mean it’s time to quit;how to align your savings with the life you actually want; andhow to create an intentional plan to care for your family—now and in the future.
Whether you’re planning for retirement, thinking about it, or already there, Fish Don’t Clap will help you rethink what comes next—and make sure you’re living with purpose, not just passing time.
Because life’s too short to wait for applause that never comes.
Retirement isn’t the time to stop—not if you want to keep on living! No, retirement is a time to create! In Fish Don’t Clap, Brad Connors shows how finishing one line of work can lead to your most creative and rewarding era. The Way of Peace is a New Thought book written by James Allen. Although Allen is more widely known for his As a Man Thinketh, it is the lesser known The Way of Peace (1907) which reflects more accurately his New Thought Movement affiliations, referencing as it does Christianity, Buddhism, and Hinduism.
The book is essentially a treatise on the importance of meditation as a 'pathway to divinity'. Whatever we meditate upon, Allen explains, we become. If you meditate upon ' that which is selfish and debasing, you will ultimately become selfish and debased'. Whereas if you meditate upon ' that which is pure and unselfish you will surely become pure and unselfish'.
The book consists of seven chapters: The Power Of Meditation; The Two Masters, Self and Truth; The Acquirement of Spiritual Power; The Realisation of Selfless Love; Entering into the Infinite; Saints, Sages, and Saviors, The Law of Service; and The Realisation of Perfect Peace. The first chapter also contains a poem, 'Star of Wisdom', which captures the essence of the book.
