Sinossi

Unusual Everyday Sounds explores the intriguing world of auditory phenomena that often fade into the background of our daily lives. It delves into the science and psychology behind these sounds, examining why certain hums, clicks, and drones trigger strong reactions. For instance, the book investigates unexplained auditory events like "The Hum," a low-frequency drone reported globally, and explores the neurological mechanisms behind sounds that trigger emotional or even physical responses, highlighting the intricate ways our brains process auditory information. This book uniquely integrates acoustics, neurology, and psychology to understand the complex interplay between our auditory environment and our cognitive well-being. By examining specific case studies and environmental noises, the author demonstrates that seemingly innocuous sounds can offer insights into human perception and environmental health. The book progresses from establishing a foundation in auditory processing to analyzing specific sounds and their effects, culminating in a discussion of broader implications for human health.

After the deluge in “the destruction of mankind” the god Ra establishes a covenant with those who have escaped from the flood. He says that what he commanded is well done, and that the destruction of his enemies removes destruction from themselves. “Said by the majesty of Ra, It is well done, all this. I shall now protect men on account of this. Said by Ra, I now raise my hand that I shall not destroy men” i.e. not again. The making of this covenant after the deluge is followed by the establishment of the New Year’s festival under the direction of the young priestesses of Hathor. ―from “The Ark, the Deluge, and the World’s Great Year” It goes unappreciated by modern Egyptologists, but it is embraced by those who savor the concept of a “hidden history” of humanity, and those who approach all human knowledge from the perspective of the esoteric. Gerard Massey’s massive Ancient Egypt: The Light of the World―first published in 1907 and the crowning achievement of the self-taught scholar―redefines the roots of Christianity via Egypt, proposing that Egyptian mythology was the basis for Jewish and Christian beliefs. Here, Cosimo proudly presents Book 9 of Ancient Egypt, in which Massey explores the prevalent imagery across numerous mythological traditions of a global flood unleashed at the behest of an angry god, and shows how they all sprang from Egyptian folklore. Peculiar and profound, this work will intrigue and delight readers of history, religion, and mythology. British author GERALD MASSEY (1828–1907) published works of poetry, spiritualism, Shakespearean criticism, and theology, but his best-known works are in the realm of Egyptology, including A Book of the Beginnings and The Natural Genesis.

The 1918 Influenza Pandemic moved worldwide in three waves, infecting up to 500 million people and causing over 40 million deaths. Several things tended to be present in areas that ended the pandemic with lower mortality rates than average. These include low rates of poverty, widespread access to healthcare, well-funded and general public health measures, and well-managed record keeping. Areas that ended the pandemic with high mortality rates tended to lack the above – they had high rates of poverty, limited access to healthcare, public health measures were unfunded or ineffective, and recordkeeping and communication were unreliable or unclear. It is essential to learn from the success and mistakes of nations passed so that we as a planet are better prepared for any pandemics that should arise in the future. Preparing involves high vaccination rates, fighting drug-resistant pathogens, and working to lower global poverty.

“Illusions commend themselves to us because they save us pain and allow us to enjoy pleasure instead. We must therefore accept it without complaint when they sometimes collide with a bit of reality against which they are dashed to pieces.”
― Sigmund Freud, Reflections on War and Death

Here is a classic historical psychology study by Sigmund Freud. Thoughts for the Time of War and Death is a set of twin essays written by Sigmund Freud in 1915, six months after the outbreak of World War I. The essays express discontent and disillusionment with human nature and human society in the aftermath of the hostilities and generated much interest among lay readers of Freud. The first essay addressed the widespread disillusionment brought on by the collapse of the Pax Britannica of the preceding century-what Freud called "the common civilization of peacetime. The second essay addressed what Freud called the peacetime 'protection racket' whereby the inevitability of death was expunged from civilized mentality. Building on the second essay of Totem and Taboo, Freud argued that such an attitude left civilians in particular unprepared for the stark horror of industrial-scale death in the Great War. Freud's account of the centrality of loss in culture has been seen as seminal for his later work, Civilization and its Discontents. Caught in the whirlwind of these war times, without any real information or any perspective upon the great changes that have already occurred or are about to be enacted, lacking all premonition of the future, it is small wonder that we ourselves become confused as to the meaning of impressions which crowd in upon us or of the value of the judgments we are forming. It would seem as though no event had ever destroyed so much of the precious heritage of mankind, confused so many of the clearest intellects or so thoroughly debased what is highest.
