  In 1938 the German Reich inflicted a wave of violent, all night attacks on several Jewish communities (Kristallnacht). Far away in Australia, William Cooper, a distinguished Elder of the Yorta Yorta Nation, led a little-known march to the German Consulate to deliver his protest regarding the violation of those human rights. 
  How contemporary Jewish and Aboriginal communities re-connected with that protest is but one chapter in a book recounting true stories of many miraculous chains of events. 
  Each chapter has its own story, each story its own theme, but common throughout are lessons on the reality of spiritual technologies: following steps of prayerful, contemplative action; acting with ceaseless energy; working mindfully with ancestors; and expressing gratitude for the emerging blessings. 
  We are each connected with the spiritual realm. Some may call spiritual forces ancestors, others angels or still others, the names of forms of divine power in their traditions. Whatever their names, these forces work intimately with us when we seek to be of service to others.   The major work of Rabbi Moses Almosnino (1515-1580), “Conduct of Life,” remains to this day an essential reference in classical Judeo-Spanish literature, now finally available in English in its first translation. First published in Ladino in 1564 as, Sefer Hanhagat ha-hayim and in 1729 as “Regimiento de la vida”, this three-volume edition is part of the prestigious collection Veritas è terra orietur. The work aims to disseminate the timeless teachings of ethics, in the words of the author: “In all that has been said, my intention is only to make you understand how the one who follows the path of virtue and customs of practising good and pure knowledge since childhood, lives a happy and fulfilled life (Volume 1, chapter 2)” This second volume addresses the confusion of indeterminism with free will (Volume 2, chapter 1) and how virtues arise from free will to surpass the force of destiny chapter 2), their conditions (chapter 3); the three types of strength or courage, which is the first virtue (chapter 4), its five properties and eleven conditions (chapter 5); as well as the ten ethical virtues, temperance (chapter 6), the sixteen properties of liberality chapters 7-8), magnificence (chapter 9), magnanimity and its fifty properties (chapter 10-12), modesty (chapter 13), meekness (chapters 14-16), affability (chapter 17), honesty or truth (chapters 18-19), and courtesy (chapter 20); following the order and numbering of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics.“Conduct of Life” draws heavily from the Nicomachean Ethics but transcends this source by situating itself at the universal intersection of several traditions: Greco-Arabic philosophy, Judeo-Christian scholasticism, classical Sephardic Judaism, and medieval Jewish thought. Thus, this work contributes to peace and intercultural understanding among peoples.

  On February 1, 1979, amid great fanfare, exiled cleric Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini landed in Tehran. The return of the leader of the revolution to his home country was one of the final markers of the Iranian Revolution, a national phenomenon that had global implications. 
  The Iranian Revolution of 1979 has been described as an epochal event, the peak of 20th century Islamic revivalism and revitalization, and the key incident that continues to impact politics across Iran, the Middle East, and the even the world as a whole. As a phenomenon that led to the creation of the first modern Islamic Republic in the world, the revolution marked the victory of Islam over secular politics, and Iran quickly became the aspiring model for Islamic fundamentalists and revivalists across the globe, regardless of nationality, culture, or religious sect. When Ayatollah Khomeini was declared ruler in December 1979 and the judicial system originally modeled on that of the West was swiftly replaced by one purely based on Islamic law, much of the world was in shock that such a religiously driven revolution could succeed so quickly, especially when it had such sweeping consequences beyond the realm of religion. 
  The Iran Hostage Crisis marked a change in American identity both as individuals and a nation. Those born in earlier decades had relatively little understanding of radical Islam, and those born later could not conceive of a world without it. Some would say that the crisis was ultimately a good thing, in that it ushered Ronald Reagan into the White House and thus led to the fall of Communism, while others would say that it was a harbinger of doom and a demonstration that even as one geopolitical foe declined, another was on the rise. Some say America was singled out because it was seen as too strong, others because it was seen as too weak.
