  Skin functions as the first line of defense against external factors such as bacteria, viruses, pollutants, and harmful UV radiation. It also plays a role in regulating body temperature, preventing dehydration, and producing vitamin D. The skin is composed of three primary layers: the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue.
