Sinossi

Spartan Military Discipline explores how the city-state of Sparta rose to military dominance in ancient Greece through a unique system of societal and military organization. The book argues that Sparta's success was not solely due to inherent martial prowess but stemmed from a carefully constructed system of indoctrination, rigorous training, and stringent social control.

For example, the agoge, Sparta's state-sponsored education system, played a crucial role in shaping boys into disciplined soldiers from a young age, instilling unwavering obedience and loyalty. The book examines the Spartan army's structure, tactics, and weaponry, including the formidable hoplite phalanx. It also investigates the societal factors that underpinned Sparta's military success, such as its political system and the role of women.

Drawing from ancient historians and archaeological findings, the book offers a nuanced perspective on Spartan military discipline, challenging romanticized views and presenting a more complex understanding of Spartan society. The book progresses from a historical overview and in-depth examination of the agoge, to an analysis of the army, and concludes with an assessment of Sparta's legacy.

Flowers were chosen as symbols for many reasons. The great variety of flora made it possible to find some plant or flower which would be a suitable figure for nearly any abstract quality or condition. A plant might be chosen because of some myth connected with its origin, as the stories of Daphne and Narcissus; because of the peculiar environment in which it thrived, as the orchid and the fungus; because of its significant shape, as the passion flower and the Easter lily; because of its brilliance or fragrance, as the verbena and the sweet lavender; because it preserved its form indefinitely, as the everlasting flower; because of unusual characteristics as the sunflower and heliotrope, which have long been sacred because of their affinity for the sun.

Tulip Mania - The First Economic...

Tulip Mania, often considered the first recorded speculative bubble in history, took place during the Dutch Golden Age in the early 17th century. This period saw some tulip bulbs, which had been newly introduced to Europe, achieve extraordinary prices. The peak of the tulip market occurred in 1634, with prices reaching unbelievable levels before plummeting drastically in February 1637. This event is frequently cited as an early example of an asset bubble, where the prices of goods diverged dramatically from their intrinsic value. The tulip mania of the 1630s remains one of the most notable cases of speculative fever in financial history.
Despite the frenzied speculation surrounding tulips, the overall economic impact on the Dutch Republic was limited. While the tulip mania itself was a unique socio-economic event, it did not significantly harm the prosperity of the Dutch economy. In fact, the Dutch Republic was one of the world's leading economic and financial powers during the 17th century, boasting the highest per capita income in the world from around 1600 to 1720. The country’s financial and economic institutions were advanced, and its economy continued to thrive even as the tulip market collapsed. Today, the term "tulip mania" has evolved into a metaphor used to describe any situation in which asset prices become detached from their underlying value, only to be followed by a sharp decline.
