Sinossi

In Joseph Conrad's compelling novella, "The Return," readers are enveloped in a rich narrative that explores themes of alienation, identity, and the complexities of human relationships. Set against a backdrop of colonial landscapes, Conrad employs a vivid yet restrained literary style imbued with psychological depth. The story unfolds through the lens of a protagonist grappling with his past as he returns to a familiar environment, only to confront the dissonance between his memories and the present reality. This poignant exploration resonates within the broader context of Conrad's oeuvre, reflecting his concerns about societal change and the enduring impact of colonialism. Joseph Conrad, a Polish-born author who became one of the foremost voices in English literature, often drew upon his own experiences as a sailor and his encounters with different cultures. This personal history not only informs the thematic richness of "The Return" but also encapsulates his ongoing fascination with the human condition, marked by existential queries and moral ambiguity. Conrad's ability to convey profound philosophical dilemmas within the framework of compelling narrative is a hallmark of his writing. This novella is highly recommended for readers who appreciate literature that probes the intricacies of the human psyche and the nuances of character interaction. "The Return" stands as a testament to Conrad's mastery, inviting reflection on the nature of belonging and the unyielding pull of one's past, making it an essential read for both scholars and literary enthusiasts alike.

Richard Bernard Heldmann was born on 12th October 1857, in St Johns Wood, North London.
By his early 20’s Heldmann began publishing fiction for the myriad magazine publications that had sprung up and were eager for good well-written content.
In October 1882, Heldmann was promoted to co-editor of Union Jack, a popular magazine, but his association with the publication ended suddenly in June 1883. It appears Heldman was prone to issuing forged cheques to finance his lifestyle. In April 1884 He was sentenced to 18 months hard labour.
In order to be well away from the scandal and damage this had caused to his reputation Heldmann adopted a pseudonym on his release from jail. Shortly thereafter the name ‘Richard Marsh’ began to appear in the literary periodicals. The use of his mother’s maiden name as part of it seems both a release and a lifeline.
A stroke of very good fortune arrived with his novel The Beetle published in 1897. This would turn out to be his greatest commercial success and added some much-needed gravitas to his literary reputation.
Marsh was a prolific writer and wrote almost 80 volumes of fiction as well as many short stories, across many genres from horror and crime to romance and humour.

The Whateley family — feared, shunned, whispered about — has welcomed a child into the world… but Wilbur Whateley is no ordinary boy. He grows unnaturally fast, speaks strange languages, and seeks forbidden knowledge from the Necronomicon itself.
Locked away in their decaying farmhouse, Wilbur and his occult-obsessed grandfather nurture a monstrous secret — a presence too large, too hungry, and too alien to remain hidden much longer.
As livestock vanish, the hills tremble, and the air fills with unholy sounds, the truth becomes undeniable:
an unseen horror is waiting to break free.
Narrated by Amazon-bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne, this fresh performance resurrects a groundbreaking tale of ancient gods, corrupted bloodlines, and the terrifying thinness of reality.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

Invariably Jerome is most often remembered for his light-hearted and humourous works such as ‘Three Men in a Boat’. Here we have a number of his beautifully lyrical short stories and some from his forgotten, and rather darker side.

Booker Taliaferro Washington (April 5, 1856 - November 14, 1915) was an American educator, author, orator, and adviser to several presidents of the United States. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader in the African American community and of the contemporary black elite. Washington was from the last generation of black American leaders born into slavery and became the leading voice of the former slaves and their descendants. They were newly oppressed in the South by disenfranchisement and the Jim Crow discriminatory laws enacted in the post-Reconstruction Southern states in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
WHAT YOU OUGHT TO DO: It is comparatively easy to perform almost any kind of work, but the value of any work is in having it performed so that the desired results may be most speedily reached, and in having the means with which the worker labours arranged so as to meet certain ends.
