Sinossi

The acclaimed WWII historian continues his in-depth chronicle of the 29th Infantry Division as it made its brutal push into Germany. By November of 1944, the U.S. 29th Infantry Division had stormed Omaha Beach on D-Day and embarked on an epic and arduous path toward Allied victory. In Our Tortured Souls, acclaimed military historian Joseph Balkoski picks up the story of the 29th on the eve of the all-out offensive intended to carry the Allies to the Rhine River by Christmas and end the war soon afterward. The plan for the 29th seemed simple enough. As part of General William Simpson’s Ninth Army, the division was to drive ten miles eastward, breaking through several German strongpoints, crossing the Roer, and seizing Jülich, beyond which lay the Rhine and Germany’s heartland.   The offensive encountered problems from the very beginning, on November 16th, when it took days to crack the German’s first line of defense. By the time the offensive was halted on the banks of the Roer three weeks later, the 29th Infantry Division had suffered 2,600 casualties and fallen short of its objectives. Balkoski reconstructs this tragic chapter in the division’s history with his trademark combination of meticulous research and vivid st

There are a lot of books about writing out there. If you’re like most writers, you’ve just about read them all. But learning how to write (and organize and outline and plot and edit and save the cat and market a breakout book) is one thing. Making and living a sustainable creative life in the face of...everything...is an entirely different matter. To know how to do that, we need to take a look at what goes on between the lines of our lives as writers so that we can live them with maybe a little more thought and intention--no matter the many interior and exterior obstacles that can threaten to derail our purpose.
In this companion book to her long-running podcast, Sara Zarr brings her sixteen-year publishing career and experience as a speaker, teacher, and mentor to a conversational and encouraging collection of hard-won insights about what it means not to just write (and perchance to publish), but to be a writer.

Living in a dysfunctional family isn't easy. But while you can't choose where you come from, you can choose the lessons you take away.

Bestselling recovery author Karen Casey looks at stories of people who grew up in dysfunctional families and "the good stuff" that can, ironically, come from the experience. She interviews survivors who emerged from the fires of turbulent households affected by abuse, addiction, or other problems, and reveals how they came to process their often-harrowing personal trials and, against the odds, triumph over their difficulties—using skills they honed in response to their childhoods. In The Good Stuff from Growing Up in a Dysfunctional Family, Casey reveals the stories and the skills they developed to live more creative and fulfilling lives, and not just survive but thrive.

"Using her interviews as groundwork, she explores the benefits that result from surviving in a dysfunctional family, including resiliency, perseverance, a sense of humor, forgiveness, kindness, and the ability to discern real love." —Publishers Weekly

The Flower of the House of Ming

The Flower of the House of Ming is a poetic and philosophical reflection by Manly P. Hall, first published in his periodical The All-Seeing Eye. Written with delicate insight and symbolic richness, this esoteric essay blends Chinese mysticism, alchemical allegory, and spiritual aspiration into a tale of transcendent beauty.
The “flower” of the Ming house is both literal and metaphorical—an emblem of purity, wisdom, and the highest virtues cultivated through inner discipline. As with many of Hall’s writings, it is a subtle initiation—a meditation for the student of spiritual philosophy to unlock with contemplation.
This new edition from Adultbrain Publishing preserves the elegance of Hall’s original words while presenting the text in a refined format for the modern seeker.

For decades, North American cities racked by deindustrialization and population loss have followed one primary path in their attempts at revitalization: a focus on economic growth in downtown and business areas. Neighborhoods, meanwhile, have often been left severely underserved. There are, however, signs of change. This collection of studies by a distinguished group of political scientists and urban planning scholars offers a rich analysis of the scope, potential, and ramifications of a shift still in progress. Focusing on neighborhoods in six cities—Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Toronto—the authors show how key players, including politicians and philanthropic organizations, are beginning to see economic growth and neighborhood improvement as complementary goals. The heads of universities and hospitals in central locations also find themselves facing newly defined realities, adding to the fluidity of a new political landscape even as structural inequalities exert a continuing influence. While not denying the hurdles that community revitalization still faces, the contributors ultimately put forth a strong case that a more hospitable local milieu can be created for making neighborhood policy. In examining the course of experiences from an earlier period of redevelopment to the present postindustrial city, this book opens a window on a complex process of political change and possibility for reform.
