Sinossi

In "Essays and Tales," Joseph Addison presents a rich tapestry of reflective essays and engaging narratives that illuminate the complexities of 18th-century English society. Crafted with Addison's signature clarity and wit, these writings explore themes such as morality, taste, and the social contract through a blend of humor and earnestness. The literary style is characterized by its accessible prose and incisive arguments, making profound philosophical ideas palatable to the general reader. Against the backdrop of the Enlightenment, Addison's work offers a keen criticism of human behavior and the cultural mores of his time, foreshadowing later developments in English literature. Addison, a prolific essayist and co-founder of "The Spectator," was deeply embedded in the intellectual currents of his era. His exposure to classical literature, combined with his pursuits in politics and public life, greatly influenced his writing. Addison sought to uplift the public discourse, and his essays were meant not just for entertainment, but also to promote moral and ethical reflection, crucial in shaping the emerging public sphere of his time. Readers seeking a blend of entertainment and enlightenment will find "Essays and Tales" an invaluable addition to their literary repertoire. The book serves as a masterclass in the art of essay writing, rich in observations that remain relevant today. Through Addison's eloquent prose, one is invited not only to engage with the text but also to reflect on one's own role within society.

When a family friend died unexpectedly, Dr. Mary Jumbelic was pulled into the investigation-and uncovered the true cause of death. This woman was one of hundreds uanble to move, unable to speak, laying on autopsy tables due to violent crimes. Mary uses her unique voice to speak for these victims and seek justice. Throughout her career as a medical examiner, Mary saw female bodies that had been sexually violated, battered, stabbed, and shot. Their corpses were dismembered. Some were buried in shallow graves, while others meticulously hidden. A majority of these deaths had been caused by someone the women knew-just like her friend. As a woman in a man's world, Mary spent her life honing her forensic skills. Through this work, she came to terms with events in her own life. Experiencing motherhood in juxtaposition with her job provided constant reminders of her two lives: one with the living, and one with the dead. Personal and professional experiences are interwoven in this tapestry of memoir.
    Real Women. True stories.
We bear witness and use the truth to effect change. Together, we speak her name.

In 1922, three of the Irish Republican Army's top gunmen arrived in New York City seeking vengeance. Their target: "Cruxy" O'Connor, a young Irishman who kept switching sides as revolution swept his country in the wake of World War I. Cruxy's last betrayal dealt a blow to Ireland's struggle for independence: six of his IRA comrades were killed when he told police the location of their safe house. A year later, the IRA gunned him down before a crowd of horrified New Yorkers.

Based primarily on first-hand accounts, most of them never before published, Ambush at Central Park is a cinematic exploration of the enigma of "Cruxy" O'Connor.

Author Mark Bulik delved through Irish government archives, newspaper accounts, census data, and unpublished material from the families of the main actors. Together they add to the story of a rebel ambush, a deadly police raid, a dinner laced with poison, a daring prison break, a boatload of tommy guns, an unlikely pair of spies who fall in love, and an assassination plot against the British cabinet.

Here is a forgotten chapter of Irish and New York history: the story of the only officially authorized IRA attack on American soil.

A true story of the largest exhumation of murder victims ever undertaken by the FBI, seeking justice for 200 families
In the shadows of Detroit's abandoned buildings and beneath the soil of county cemeteries lay hundreds of murder victims-buried anonymously, their killers uncharged, their families not knowing why they disappeared. For decades, only decaying police files hinted at what happened to these forgotten cold cases murders.
Until two women decided to listen to the dead.
Women Who Talk to the Dead chronicles the remarkable journey of Detroit Police Detective Shannon Jones and FBI Special Agent Leslie Larsen. Surrounded by skepticism and bureaucratic roadblocks, these women spearhead Operation UNITED—the largest coordinated exhumation of unidentified murder victims in FBI history.
Through rain-soaked cemetery digs, crumbling case files, and bone-filled body bags, Jones and Larsen assemble a team led by female forensic anthropologists, scientists, and investigators who methodically unearthed Detroit's painful past. Their primary goal: to identify the nameless dead and bring closure to families who had spent decades wondering what happened to their loved ones. Their ultimate goal: solve 200 murder cases.

    Boleslaw Prus

Aleksander Głowacki who wrote under the nom de plume Boleslaw Prus was born on 20th August 1847 at Hrubieszów in the Kingdom of Poland, at that time, controlled by the Russian Empire.
At three his mother died and then at nine his father. Female relatives helped raise him but at 15 he joined the Polish uprising against the might of Imperial Russia. Wounded on the battlefield, arrested and imprisoned, he was later released into the care of a relative and resumed secondary school and then Warsaw University but poverty forced him to leave after two years. At some point he developed agoraphobia which often caused problems.
In 1869, he enrolled in the Forestry Department at Puławy but was soon sacked and so he began a system of self-education that led to work as a newspaper columnist on a wide-ranging series of topics that eventually became the ‘Weekly Chronicles’ and spanned 40 years.
With his finances now stabilized he married and then adopted his late brother-in-law’s son.
It seems he had doubts as to the scale of his talents and early on adopted the name ‘Boleslaw Prus’ for both his journalistic and literary offerings.
His work as a short-story writer met with much acclaim. He wrote several dozen of them, originally published in newspapers and ranging in length from micro-story to novella. His keen observation of everyday life and sense of humor are evident in them.
During his career he also wrote novels. After ‘Pharoah’, in 1895, he embarked on a four-month journey taking in Berlin, Dresden, Nuremberg, Rapperswil in Switzerland, where he stayed for two months, and his final destination, Paris. Here his agoraphobia was so bad he couldn’t cross the Seine.
However, his writing continued and in 1911 his novel ‘Changes’, though uncompleted, began to be serialised. It was never finished.
Boleslaw Prus died on 19th May 1912, at his Warsaw apartment. He was 64. A National Hero, thousands attended both his funeral service and interment.
