    Tarascan Empire - The Fierce...

The Tarascan Empire flourished in the rugged and resource-rich region of western Mexico, primarily in what is now the state of Michoacán. Unlike the arid landscapes of central Mexico dominated by the Aztecs, the Tarascan homeland was defined by volcanic highlands, fertile valleys, and vast lakes, particularly Lake Pátzcuaro, which played a central role in their civilization. The geography of this region not only shaped their way of life but also provided a natural defense against external threats, including the expansionist ambitions of the Aztecs.
The varied landscape of Michoacán consisted of towering mountains, deep forests, and fertile plateaus. This diverse terrain allowed the Tarascans to develop a robust agricultural system, cultivating maize, beans, squash, and chili peppers, which formed the foundation of their diet. The presence of rivers and lakes further supported fishing and provided fresh water, making settlements around these water bodies highly strategic. Lake Pátzcuaro, in particular, was not only an economic and social hub but also held deep religious significance. It was believed to be the gateway to the underworld in Tarascan mythology, reinforcing its central role in spiritual life.
Natural resources played a crucial role in the rise of the Tarascan Empire. The region was rich in minerals, especially copper and obsidian, which were vital for both tools and weaponry. Unlike the Aztecs, whose military strength relied on wooden clubs and stone blades, the Tarascans developed advanced metalworking techniques, producing copper axes, bronze weapons, and intricate ornaments. This technological advantage gave them a distinct edge in warfare and trade, allowing them to maintain independence from their more dominant neighbors.

    Sui Dynasty - Reunification and...

The period before the rise of the Sui Dynasty was marked by fragmentation and instability, as China remained divided between the Northern and Southern Dynasties. This era, which lasted from the late 4th century to the late 6th century, was characterized by constant warfare, shifting alliances, and a deep cultural divide between the north and south. The fall of this system set the stage for the reunification of China under the Sui Dynasty.
The north was ruled by a succession of non-Han Chinese states, often founded by nomadic groups that had migrated into China during the decline of the Western Jin Dynasty. The Northern Wei, established by the Tuoba clan of the Xianbei people, was the most powerful of these states. Over time, the rulers of the Northern Wei adopted Chinese customs, Confucian governance, and Buddhism, which helped stabilize their rule. However, internal struggles, court intrigue, and opposition from powerful aristocratic families led to the dynasty’s division into the Eastern and Western Wei, eventually giving rise to the Northern Qi and Northern Zhou dynasties.
In contrast, the Southern Dynasties were ruled by Han Chinese elites who maintained a more traditional Chinese way of life. The Eastern Jin, followed by the Liu Song, Southern Qi, Liang, and Chen dynasties, governed the southern regions, centered around the lower Yangtze River. These dynasties often suffered from weak central control, as powerful noble families exerted significant influence over the government. While the south was culturally rich and economically prosperous, political instability and frequent coups weakened its ability to resist northern invasions.

P.G. Wodehouse, the master of British humor, produced dozens of books and hundreds of short stories in his long and prolific career. But none of his creations has quite captured the world's imagination as much as his bumbling, empty-headed, man-about-town Bertie Wooster and Bertie's faithful, knight-in-shining tuxedo Jeeves. Collected here are three of Wodehouse's most beloved "Jeeves and Wooster" tales - including ten short stories from the anthology "Carry On, Jeeves," as well as the complete novels "The Inimitable Jeeves" and "Right Ho, Jeeves" - each a master class in comedic writing. ("Carry On, Jeeves" also features the only Wooster and Jeeves story narrated by Jeeves himself!) Along with Jeeves and Bertie, we are introduced to an entire cast of beloved Wodehouse characters: Madeline Bassett, Bingo Little, James "Corky" Corcoran, Honoria Glossop, Rockmetteller Todd and the terrifying and bombastic Aunt Agatha. These three books are presented here in their original and unabridged form.

Inspirational and insightful, Bread and War is a compelling account of feeding, eating and resistance in wartime Ukraine

From the military kitchens which cook for soldiers and volunteers, to the chefs who shifted from fine dining to turning out hot meals and loaves of bread for families in need - food has become a central part of Ukraine's war effort.

Food is a weapon, a lifeline, a means of survival. It's also a powerful symbol of national identity and memory for the millions of people who've been forced from their homes.

Bread and War tells the extraordinary stories of just some of those people - the army cooks, the bakers, the kitchen volunteers, the charity workers, the refugees and the young chefs who repeatedly reopen cafes after multiple bombings, determined to reclaim Ukrainian food memories after decades of Soviet suppression, driven to keep Ukraine independent in politics and culture.

Elvis Presley, born in 1935, became known as the "King of Rock and Roll". He was a singer and actor whose career took off in 1954 when Sam Phillips recorded him singing "That's All Right," a blues number. Elvis’s performances were known for their suggestive movements and gyrations which created controversy. Despite this, his popularity grew rapidly. He signed with RCA Victor in 1955 and had his first number-one hit with "Heartbreak Hotel" in 1956. Elvis’s music combined elements of rock and roll, pop, rockabilly, country, gospel, R&B, and blues. He was drafted into the US Army in 1958 and died at the age of 42 in 1977.

    CURIOUS FACT SAMPLES:

Elvis Presley's twin brother, Jesse Garon, was delivered stillborn 35 minutes before Elvis was born. Elvis became very close to his parents, especially his mother, growing up in Tupelo, Mississippi.

The Presley family attended an Assembly of God church, where Elvis found his initial musical inspiration. They often relied on neighbors and government food assistance because Vernon Presley moved from one odd job to the next.

Sam Phillips was looking for someone who could bring the sound of black musicians to a broader audience. He invited Elvis to record after being impressed with his singing, pairing him with guitarist Winfield "Scotty" Moore and upright bass player Bill Black.

During an unfruitful recording session, Elvis launched into a 1946 blues number, Arthur Crudup's "That's All Right", which Phillips began taping. This was the sound he had been looking for, which led to the start of Elvis's career.
