Sinossi

Tired of the boring, incomprehensible, alphabet soup that coding books throw at you? Prefer to enjoy learning HTML? Itching to smash zombies while learning how to build websites? You're in luck.

Only your web development skills can save the planet from the hordes of zombies that walk our streets. As everyone assuredly knows (because the author didn't make it up at all) creating web pages is the only sure way to kill a zombie, well that and a shotgun… This book will get you beating down hordes in a post-apocalyptic second with HTML.

What You'll Beat Zombies With

Besides learning how to punch a zombie in the HTML5, you'll learn the major HTML elements that make up a modern web page and how to put them to good use. You'll learn the structural underpinnings of a web page, how to mark up text, how to wrangle attributes, and ways to embed images, audio, and video. By the time you're done you'll understand HTML, know how to build your own web page, and pwn zombies with your skills.

How You'll Learn to Smack Zombies Around

You won't just passively take in the view, like a zombie shuffling across the mainland. You'll have plenty of combat practice with analogies, examples, and code tutorials you can build, break and fix again. Working with your hands and your head you'll craft code that pleases the eye and knocks a zombie into last Tuesday.

All the code and directions are provided as both codepen tutorials and downloadable html files, so you can fight the apocalypse how and where you like. You can work with them on the codepen site or on your own device.

And later you'll bring those skills together in a final project that cements those skills into zombie smashing muscle memory.

Why Zombies?

Are zombies just a gimmick? Why would this be any better than a straight laced book that sticks to the facts?

Straight laced books are often straight boring. And if you have insomnia problems go buy that book. The author, John, has read the boring books and knows that staying awake and engaged are also important for learning. But this book uses zombie references and analogies not just to make you smile, but to help the material stick. If a tough technical concept is related in silly terms you understand, like a zombie trying to buy gum at a super market, it's much more likely to stay in that brain those zombies are intent on eating.

There's no reason good learning can't live right alongside good fun. So grab your computer, grab your sense of humor and hit that buy button. We've got websites to build and zombies to smack.

A “superbly written, richly illustrated” guide to the animals who lived 450 million years ago—in the fossil-rich area where Cincinnati, Ohio now stands (Rocks & Minerals).

The region around Cincinnati, Ohio, is known throughout the world for the abundant and beautiful fossils found in limestones and shales that were deposited as sediments on the sea floor during the Ordovician Period, about 450 million years ago—some 250 million years before the dinosaurs lived. In Ordovician time, the shallow sea that covered much of what is now the North American continent teemed with marine life. The Cincinnati area has yielded some of the world’s most abundant and best-preserved fossils of invertebrate animals such as trilobites, bryozoans, brachiopods, molluscs, echinoderms, and graptolites.

So famous are the Ordovician fossils and rocks of the Cincinnati region that geologists use the term “Cincinnatian” for strata of the same age all over North America. This book synthesizes more than 150 years of research on this fossil treasure-trove, describing and illustrating the fossils, the life habits of the animals represented, their communities, and living relatives, as well as the nature of the rock strata in which they are found and the environmental conditions of the ancient sea.

A decorated fighter pilot and PGA professional tells the story of his life and service—to both his nation and others—in this remarkable memoir that is a stirring record of faith, patriotism, family, philanthropy, and golf.

What does it mean to be a patriot? For Oklahoma native Dan Rooney, it is someone who not only puts his life on the line for country, but who opens his heart and mind and seeks to build a life that embodies the purest and most concentrated essence of himself. For many, Rooney is the model of a patriot: as an Air Force pilot who deployed to Iraq, serving three tours of duty; as a professional golfer who established a nonprofit foundation awarding thousands of scholarships to the children of fallen and disabled veterans; as the father of five daughters; as a man of faith, whose copilot, both in the skies and on the ground, has always been God.
A Patriot’s Calling is his autobiographical journey through some of the most character-defining moments of his awe-inducing life and career. “On my third tour of duty in Iraq as F -16 fighter pilot, I felt a powerful calling from God to share the miraculous fusion of people and experiences uniquely placed along my journey. During my reflection, I began to understand how the forces of synchronicity had shaped my life. Synchronicity, or, as I like to call it, ‘chance with a purpose,’ is all around us. These encounters with God’s messengers are the sign-posts along the road of life guiding us toward our essence.” A Patriot’s Calling illuminates Rooney’s true essence—and offers guidance and inspiration for us all.

“This well-researched, well-told story takes readers into a world of espionage, industrial ingenuity, and American resilience . . . a compelling history.” —Robert Whitaker, author of Anatomy of an Epidemic

Silver Medal Winner of the Independent Publisher Book Award for History (World)

In 1940, with German U-boats blockading all commerce across the Atlantic Ocean, a fireball at the Crown Cork and Seal factory lit the sky over Baltimore. Rumors of Nazi sabotage led to an FBI investigation and pulled an entire industry into the machinery of national security as America stood on the brink of war.

In Cork Wars, David A. Taylor traces this fascinating story through the lives of three men and their families: Charles McManus, who ran Crown Cork and Seal, a company that manufactured everything from bottle caps to oil-tight gaskets for fighter planes; Frank DiCara, who watched the fire blazed at the factory and got a job at Crown just a few years later; and Melchor Marsa, who managed Crown Cork and Seal’s plants in Spain and Portugal—and was perfectly placed to be recruited as a spy.

Drawing on in-depth interviews with surviving family members, personal collections, and recently declassified government records, Taylor weaves this by turns beautiful, dark, and outrageous narrative with the drama of a thriller. From the factory floor to the corner office, Cork Wars reflects shifts in our ideas of modernity, the environment, and the materials and norms of American life. World War II buffs—and anyone interested in a good yarn—will be gripped by this bold and frightening tale of a forgotten episode of American history.

A broad ranging how-to guide through permaculture gardening and community development, with articles about gardening in rough environments and anecdotes about using the garden in school, built up from a local gardening newspaper column.
“”If ever a mortal heard the word of god, it would be in a garden at the close of day.”
I first read that quote in Civ.
Over the years, I’ve learned more and more about the natural world. In many ways, it was a natural outgrowth of both my philosophical approach and my inclination for teaching.
It's a matter of a development-orientation, which comes down to watch, experiment and learn. Gardening, as presented here, is more than just growing things; it’s teaching and learning, in the most practical and natural possible way. It’s called natural science for a reason.
Collected herein are a series of gardening columns (written for the local newspaper), tips on companion planting and permaculture, short stories of our in-school gardening projects, and other info that’ll give you a rounded idea of how to operate your garden as a space for growing, whether that’s veggies and wildlife or confidence and education.
