Sinossi

In "Critical Miscellanies: The Death of Mr Mill," John Morley delves into the significant impact of John Stuart Mill on contemporary liberal thought, exploring themes of individual liberty, utilitarianism, and moral philosophy. Morley's prose elegantly balances analytical rigor with a profound appreciation for Mill's intellectual legacy, effectively situating Mill's ideas within the larger discourse of 19th-century political philosophy. Coupled with critical essays, these miscellaneous reflections reveal the complexities of Mill's character and his enduring influence, allowing readers to engage deeply with pivotal philosophical inquiries of the era. John Morley, a prominent English writer, politician, and biographer, was deeply embedded in the intellectual currents of his time, often grappling with themes of freedom and social justice. His association with Mill, both personal and philosophical, galvanized Morley's understanding of the transformative power of ideas. This work is informed by Morley'Äôs exposure to liberal thought and his role as an editor who championed radical reforms, thus providing a lens through which he articulates Mill'Äôs philosophical and societal contributions. "Critical Miscellanies: The Death of Mr Mill" is highly recommended for readers seeking an insightful exploration of Mill's philosophies through Morley'Äôs incisive lenses. This book serves not only as a tribute to Mill but also as a pivotal work for anyone interested in the intersections of philosophy, politics, and history, offering timeless insights that resonate with today's societal challenges.

This is the true story of how an ‘Average Joe’ found success and then became a victim of that success.
One among ten children, the author, Mohandas enjoys a happy childhood in the heart of a loving family, but finds himself ill-prepared when he is propelled out of the cocoon into a world where earning is key and results are everything. Mohandas lands his first job in seafood exports and takes to it like a fish to water. These are the days of the Licence Raj and soon Mohandas is scrambling to woo buyers, dodge competition and untangle red tape.
How this cocooned ‘caterpillar’ turns to be a free-flying, confident ‘butterfly’, flying in the face of all odds makes up the rest of this story, dotted with colourful anecdotes, playful romance and heartwarming family ties.
If success and failure are two sides of a coin, the coin flips this way and that in the author’s life proving the interesting premise that ‘Success beyond a measure is a recipe for Failure’. A compelling inspiring and authentic memoir of how to get back on your feet when life knocks you down…again and again.

James Augustine Aloysius Joyce was born on the 2nd February 1882 in Dublin into a middle-class family, and the eldest of ten surviving siblings
Admired as a brilliant student he briefly attended the Christian Brothers-run O'Connell School before excelling at the Jesuit schools of Clongowes and Belvedere. From there he went on to attend University College Dublin from 1898, studying English, French and Italian
In 1902, Joyce was now in his early twenties, and went to Paris to study Medicine but soon abandoned his teachings. Back in Dublin to attend to his dying Mother he met Nora Barnacle. They bonded immediately into a life-long match. Together they decided to emigrate to Europe. The couple lived in Trieste, Rome, Paris, and finally Zürich where Joyce pursued a variety of jobs and ventures to supplement his literary pursuits but none of these paid off.
After publishing a poetry volume, ‘Chamber Music’, in 1907, his short story collection ‘The Dubliners’, in 1914, helped establish his talent in the rapidly changing world.
Although far from home Joyce’s literary heart and works were set in his recollections of Dublin. Characters are close resemblances of family and friends and indeed enemies. His landmark work ‘Ulysses’, published in 1922, is set in the streets and alleyways of the city as it parallels Homer’s Odyssey in a variety of styles including its famed stream of consciousness.
His pen continued to produce classics of the order of ‘A Portrait of the Artist as A Young Man’ and ‘Finnegan’s Wake’ together with several volumes of poetry and a play ‘The Exiles, in 1918.
On the 11th January 1941, Joyce underwent surgery in Zürich for a perforated duodenal ulcer. The next day he fell into a coma. On the 13th after a brief period of lucidity in which he called for his wife and son he passed. He was 58.
