Sinossi

In "The Life of George Washington," John Marshall crafts a meticulously detailed biography that both venerates and humanizes America'Äôs founding father. Written in the early 19th century, the book employs a narrative style marked by eloquence and precision, reflecting the emerging American identity post-Revolution. Marshall'Äôs comprehensive approach draws from extensive personal correspondence and firsthand accounts, positioning Washington as a pivotal figure in the tumultuous years of nation-building, while also illuminating the complexities of his character beyond mythic representation. John Marshall, a significant political figure and the fourth Chief Justice of the United States, was deeply influenced by his own experiences in the early American legal and political landscape. His relationship with Washington, coupled with his legal expertise, imbued him with a profound understanding of both the historical and moral dimensions of Washington'Äôs life. These connections facilitated a nuanced portrayal that captures Washington's leadership qualities against the backdrop of his struggles and ideals, making it not just a biography but a foundational text on American governance and character. This monumental work is highly recommended for scholars and enthusiasts of American history alike. Marshall'Äôs profound insights and narrative flair not only educate but also inspire a deeper appreciation for Washington'Äôs enduring legacy. "The Life of George Washington" remains an indispensable resource for understanding the formidable complexities of leadership during a nascent period in American history.

Loss. Defeat. Hardship. Suffering. Pain. They're at the center of the experience of being human. And yet, these experiences can cripple-unless they result in strength. When a sudden accident resulted in multiple fractures to his leg and threatened to take him out of soccer permanently, Steve Zakuani faced his biggest challenge yet. The road to his soccer success hadn't merely involved athletic challenges; in the years leading up to his position with the Seattle Sounders, Zakuani had overcome an upbringing in one of London's roughest neighborhoods, battled personal apathy, and learned to not only walk but run after an accident that left doctors without hope for his future in soccer. He found renewed purpose through the influence of a mentor and, through that mentor, found his purpose in God's call on his life. Yet his early challenges began to look small after Zakuani suffered another injury that broke his leg-and, this time, threatened his career. That injury-and the 500 days of recovery before he returned to the field-forced him to grapple with who he was when his identity in soccer and his personal goals were taken out of his hands. This book, drawn from journals written during his recovery, gives readers a raw, honest look into Zakuanis story-and coach readers how to face tragedy with a positive mindset, how to set goals that are bigger than their adversity, how to remain hopeful in their darkest moments, and how to help others in their life overcome their own adversities. Includes a study guide to aid in personal reflection or group discussion

Yet Will I Trust Him is more than just a statement said by an ancient Biblical character. It is a statement that must be true in everyone who names the name of Jesus. It is easy to look at a statement like that and be inspired, but it takes on a whole different meaning when you have to live it. I want to share my story with you and explain exactly what I mean. I pray this book you hold in your hands will help you if you ever have to live out this most powerful statement of faith.
What if I told you it was my frustrations and disappointments that strengthened my relationship and faith in God? What if I told you it was not the blessings that made me love God more but his sustaining power in my trials that fueled my confidence in him? What if I told you that you can be happy and flourish without the things you thought you couldn’t live without?
In Yet Will I Trust Him, I will discuss the things God showed me in the midst of my greatest tragedies. This is not a normal story, but it is my story. It is full of priceless revelation that came out of costly experiences. I pray that as you read this book, possibly from your fiery furnace or your lion’s den, you experience Jesus in a way that will change your life and encourage you forever. Everything may be going great for you now. I pray this book helps you if at any moment a storm rises up and threatens to shake your faith.
If you question if God is good all the time, this book is for you. God is always at work and is always speaking. Are we watching and listening?

Gestapo Hunter explores the charmed life and exceptional career of Ted Sismore, widely considered one of the RAF's very best wartime navigators and leaders. A quiet, unassuming man who was nicknamed "Daisy" on account of his youthful complexion, Ted was one of only a handful of aircrew to complete a tour of operations in Blenheims in the summer of 1941. He flew in the daylight attack on Berlin, timed to coincide with an address being given by Hermann Göring, for which he received the first of several awards for gallantry and which was widely publicized. Identified by Basil Embry, the mercurial AOC of 2 Group, as something of a kindred spirit, Ted joined the Group's HQ staff, planning Operation Jericho, the famous attack on the prison at Amiens on February 18, 1944, and taking part on October 31 later that year in another "spectacular" to bomb the Gestapo HQ at Aarhus in Denmark. Raids on the SS and Gestapo became something of a specialty, Ted leading further pinpoint bombing attacks on "Shell House" in Copenhagen (Operation Carthage) and the Gestapo HQ at Odense. After the war, Ted teamed up with Mick Martin, the famous Dambuster, to break the flying record from London to Cape Town, in 1947, a journey of almost 7,000 miles. He later qualified as a pilot, flying Meteors, Javelins, and Canberras, retiring as an air commodore. He died in 2012.

Learning to Think - A Memoir of...

    Tracy King

Tracy King was raised in a house of contradictions—her family was happy and creative, yet shadowed by debt, phobias, her father's alcoholism, and the illusory promises of a born-again Christian church. The uneasy balance of the King household was irrevocably upended on a rainy spring night in 1988, when her father was killed by teenagers just blocks from their public housing estate.

The account of her father's death remained hazy, made worse by the fact that four of the accused teenagers—neighborhood boys she could not avoid—were never charged. What could have triggered such an act of aggression?

Over the years, in a bid to balm her grief and gaps in formal education, King journeyed through multiple belief systems: she distanced herself from fundamentalism, searching for clarity instead in the occult, paranormal beliefs, and conspiracy theories. Amid the chaos of her coming of age, she stumbled upon a copy of Carl Sagan's The Demon-Haunted World on the shelves of a Birmingham bookshop—a discovery that proved transformative.

Learning to Think is a resounding battle cry for the value of education and the freedom to think critically, imaginatively, and for oneself.
