Sinossi

The Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) is the representative organization for manufacturing industries in Kenya.
We all believe that the courts must be open, impartial, efficient and effective to secure rights, reduce uncertainty and promote a conducive atmosphere for investment. Well-designed laws and regulations cannot, on their own, ensure business rights are actualized, without an institution that will, through dependable interpretation, enforce those rights and settle disputes. Access to justice is a basic principle of the rule of law and is a basic human right. It is also closely linked to poverty reduction, since being poor and marginalized means being deprived of choices, opportunities, access to basic resources and a voice in decision-making. Lack of access to justice limits the effectiveness of poverty reduction and democratic governance programmes by limiting participation, transparency and accountability.
Over the recent past, topics that have featured prominently in the Kenya Magistrates' and Judges' Association (KMJA) and KAM sponsored annual conferences have generally been about challenges in trial processes including the impact of limited public knowledge of court processes, corruption, illicit trade, customs, taxation and tariffs, intellectual property and standards.

Impact assessment/evaluation is done after a policy change to determine its impact or lack thereof. The report shows how the Business Advocacy Fund made a point of attempting to assess the impact made by KAM. This report determines whether there was any impact after the commercial law benchbook was designed. Not reform to regulation per se, but an effective means of ensuring that judges are all aware of the law relating to commerce so that they can apply more consistently.

In Our Business Civilization, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian James Truslow Adams delivers a sharp and thoughtful critique of early 20th-century American society. With incisive essays first published in leading magazines of the 1920s, Adams explores how business values and the pursuit of profit came to dominate nearly every aspect of American life—shaping its ethics, culture, and intellectual priorities. He contrasts the American experience with that of Europe, where older institutions such as the aristocracy, church, and professions balanced economic ambitions with cultural depth.
Adams raises urgent questions about materialism, the erosion of ethical standards, and the narrowing of social values in a business-dominated culture. This work remains strikingly relevant today, offering listeners a historical lens through which to consider the persistent tensions between commerce, culture, and the human spirit.

The author of The Circle of Simplicity “joyfully invites us to discover a robust and real personal expansion with each other as we remake our society” (Mark Lakeman, cofounder, The City Repair Project).

Every man for himself! For too long we have lived in a competitive, consumer-oriented culture, destroying the well-being of people and the planet. We believe that money brings happiness, yet all too often, the opposite is true. The pursuit of wealth at any cost corrupts our values and diminishes our lives. The resulting inequality breaks down social cohesion and generates envy, bitterness, and resentment. Greed breeds more greed.

Living Room Revolution refutes the notion that selfishness is at the root of human nature. Research shows that people—given the right circumstances—can be caring, nurturing and collaborative. Presented with the opportunity, they gravitate toward actions and policies embodying empathy, fairness, and trust instead of competition, fear, and greed. The regeneration of social ties and the sense of caring and purpose that comes from creating community drive this essential transformation.

At the heart of this movement is the ancient art of conversation. Living Room Revolution provides a practical toolkit of concrete strategies to facilitate personal and social change by bringing people together in community and conversation.

The heart of happiness is joining with others in good talk and laughter. Each person can make a difference, and it can all start in your own living room!

“Small groups. Study circles. Stop ’n chats. House parties. Movie nights. Online sharing. Bring people together, and you never know what kind of fuse you’ll ignite for change.” —Wanda Urbanska, author of The Heart of Simple Living

Mark Twain is arguably one of the most famous authors in the United States, with his books Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. His characters were a typical and yet deviant episode of the time period in which he lived, depicting the circumstances under which many people lived. The paradox lies in the fact that many people were shocked and impressed by his stories at the same time.
As if the controversy wasn’t enough, Mark’s financial situation (whose name was actually Samuel Clemens) was to be lamented, as were some other struggles he faced. He would probably be proud to see how many people have embraced his works and literature now, more than 140 years later.
