The enduring success of the James Bond franchise has made the casting of a new Bond actor a very big deal in the film and entertainment industry. Tabloids and entertainment clickbait sites love nothing more than constantly speculating (wrongly of course) on who the next Bond actor might be. Taking on the part of James Bond is like playing the lead in Hamlet, Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes, or Batman. Others have played the part before you and others will play the part after you. Speculation about the next incumbent is therefore inevitable, unavoidable, and endless. It is a constant background hum even when someone else actually has the part. 
  
More people have walked on the moon than played James Bond. Despite the longevity of the franchise the Bond actors themselves remain a small and exclusive club. There are however dozens of actors who might potentially have played James Bond through the decades if only fate hadn't intervened. In the book which follows we will leave no stone unturned in an attempt to find out how many potential Bond actors there have been since 1962. There is a fascinating alternative cinema universe where the Bond actors are completely different from the ones we ended up with in our own familiar movie dimension. In this book we will explore what that alternative James Bond universe might plausibly have looked like.

The Mississippian culture, a sophisticated and influential civilization, thrived in the southeastern United States from approximately 800 CE to 1600 CE. This culture, named after the Mississippi River, was centered around the river valleys and floodplains of the American Midwest, particularly in areas that are now parts of modern-day Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, and Mississippi. It is best known for its massive earthworks, especially mounds, which were used for both ceremonial and burial purposes. The Mississippian people developed a complex society that was marked by large-scale agriculture, intricate trade networks, and powerful political and religious institutions.
The origins of the Mississippian culture can be traced back to the earlier Woodland period, during which smaller villages and simple mound-building practices began to emerge. By around 800 CE, however, the Mississippian culture had fully developed, distinguished by its highly organized cities, monumental architecture, and wide-reaching trade connections. The Mississippians were expert farmers, cultivating staple crops such as maize, beans, and squash, which allowed their settlements to flourish and grow in both size and complexity.
One of the most notable features of the Mississippian culture was its social and political structure. The culture was organized around large chiefdoms, with powerful leaders who held both political and religious authority. These chiefs often resided in large, fortified towns that served as hubs of trade, governance, and religious activity. The largest and most famous of these urban centers was Cahokia, located near present-day St. Louis, Missouri. At its height, Cahokia had a population of over 10,000 people, making it one of the largest urban centers in pre-Columbian North America.

The story of China's imperial unification represents one of history's most consequential political transformations. "Imperial Chinese Foundations: Uniting the Land" explores the three dynasties that forged China's imperial system—a political structure that would endure for over two millennia. 
The brief but revolutionary Qin Dynasty (221-206 BCE) ended centuries of warring states by conquering all rivals under the leadership of the First Emperor, Qin Shi Huang. Through military might, standardized writing, currency, measurements, and a unified legal code, the Qin created China's first centralized bureaucratic empire—though their harsh Legalist policies triggered rebellion after the emperor's death. 
The Western Han Dynasty (206 BCE-9 CE) consolidated imperial rule through a more pragmatic blend of Confucian ideology and centralized governance. Under Emperor Wu's dynamic leadership, the Han expanded Chinese territory, opened the Silk Road, established the civil service examination system, and created cultural and political institutions that would define Chinese civilization for millennia. 
As power shifted to the Eastern Han (25-220 CE), the dynasty initially flourished before facing mounting challenges from natural disasters, court intrigues, and the Yellow Turban Rebellion. Yet even as political cohesion weakened, this period saw remarkable innovations—including paper, the seismograph, and advances in mathematics and medicine—while Buddhism began its profound influence on Chinese civilization. 
Through examining these three foundational dynasties, we witness the birth and evolution of the imperial Chinese state that would serve as a template for governance across East Asia and continue to influence Chinese identity into the modern era.
