  "In 1939," Julian Padowicz says, "I was a Polish Jew-hater. Under different circumstances my story might have been one of denouncing Jews to the Gestapo. As it happened, I was a Jew myself, and I was seven years old."  Julian's mother was a Warsaw socialite who had no interest in child-rearing. She turned her son over completely to his governess, a good Catholic, named Kiki, whom he loved with all his heart. Kiki was deeply worried about Julian's immortal soul, explaining that he could go to Heaven only if he became a Catholic.  When bombs began to fall on Warsaw, Julian's world crumbled. His beloved Kiki returned to her family in Lodz; Julian's stepfather joined the Polish army, and the grief-stricken boy was left with the mother whom he hardly knew.  Resourceful and determinded, his mother did whatever was necessary to provide for herself and her son: she brazenly cut into food lines and befriended Russian officers to get extra rations of food and fuel. But brought up by Kiki to distrust all things Jewish, Julian considered his mother's behavior un-Christian.  In the winter of 1940, as conditions worsened, Julian and his mother made a dramatic escape to Hungary on foot through the Carpathian mountains and Julian came to believe that even Jews could go to Heaven.

  On 10 July 1995, Kathleen Ward went into Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda to give birth. While she was there, her ability to give birth to any future children was taken away from her, without her consent. At the hands of Dr Michael Neary, she underwent an unplanned and unnecessary hysterectomy. She was not the only one. Dr Neary performed 188 peripartum hysterectomies over a twenty-five year period, according to the Judge Harding Clark Report. For Kathleen, what followed this violent and unwanted surgery was a dark period filled with debilitating panic attacks and traumatic relivings of the operation, all while she remained the primary breadwinner in her family and sought treatment for her depression and anxiety - a search that would take years. Neary has been struck off the medical register, but walks free. For years, Kathleen fought a tide of misinformation, mishandled evidence and injustice, seeking recognition and compensation. In A Violation Against Women, she relates her story with honesty and sincerity. It is ultimately a hopeful, uplifting account. In 1984, Kathleen Ward established a pioneering multidisciplinary holistic health clinic in County Monaghan. She is now in her thirty-first year of practice.

What started as a one-night event in Champaign-Urbana, IL, has grown into annual storytelling events in multiple cities, showcasing dozens of remarkable women who shape their communities. As we celebrate the first ten years of "That's What She Said," we wanted to take a moment to look back on all the voices raised, the stories shared, the lives impacted.  We wanted to get these stories out to even more women who can benefit from them. That's What She Said: From the Stage to the Page, Vol. 1 features stories by 16 women, developed originally for a live storytelling performance. These women were invited back to share their stories in our first ever published collection by the She Said Press. Each story is read by the author, allowing the listener to experience their unique voice and their powerful, yet relatable journey. These are real women sharing their extraordinatory stories.

  Rachel Ann Cullen's first book, Running for My Life, described her own marathon journey through depression, bipolar disorder and body dysmorphia, and her revelatory discovery that running could transform her physical and mental wellbeing. Since hearing from people who had read about her experiences, Rachel wanted to tell some stories of other runners from all around the world – ordinary people living with mental health struggles, dealing with grief, cancer and other unavoidable life events who have relied on running to get them through their worst days and to keep going. Running for Our Lives shares moving accounts of hope and resilience; it demonstrates the power of running to help us all overcome adversity, and is a lesson for us all in learning not only how to survive life's challenges, but to thrive.
