Sinossi

The year is 401 BC, a new art form is burgeoning, what we now call La Tene, or Celtic, spreading north from the alpine regions. Three years earlier Athens had finally been defeated by Sparta and her allies; Rome is but a fledgling city state; the Etruscan confederation is in decline; hordes of Gallic warriors are rampaging south over the Alps and through all this, two from the far northern Tin Islands, blithely wander.
It is a tale related by a contemporary storyteller, thankfully unconstrained by words and phrases that had been off limits to the Teller when entertaining his Iron Age audience. Notwithstanding, the style of delivery remains concise, avoiding hyperbole and melodrama, with the narrator hoping, as the Teller had done, to paint pictures in people's minds. The dialogue is again fairly contemporary, minus anything too modern, such as current phrases, slang, or anything pandering to recent trends.
Underlying all, is the tension felt by the Teller, bound by his pact with the all-powerful spirit world, those who had bestowed the gift to entertain by his words, on condition he never immersed himself in their world. To actually alter the course of a life, he felt certain, would at the very least, bring loss of the ability he'd been granted and at worst, he could not even begin to imagine the scale of retribution exacted. Breaking that pact, invited tragedy, but when would it strike? The not knowing was worse than the certainty it would.

The world of Chaiavis is a lawless place. As a haven for smugglers, mercenaries, and criminals from all corners of Fringe Space, the sprawling city’s law enforcement officials are consistently overwhelmed…at least those who aren’t already in the pockets of the local gangs and cartels.
Banished from her homeworld of Haphez due to a genetic defect, Kat Reilly has called Chaiavis home since childhood. Her intimate knowledge of the streets and inner workings of the city has turned her into a skilled fixer. Her clients—the desperate, the powerful, sometimes both—seek out her services when conventional channels aren’t an option.
When she’s hired by an agent from Haphez’s own embassy to track down a stolen service weapon, Kat is tempted to refuse. But the deeper she digs into the theft, the clearer it becomes that the weapon is merely a piece of a much larger, more sinister puzzle. On this job, her mission to help others becomes a battle for her own survival.
I Am Reilly is a short story set just prior to the events of Nexus: Ziva Payvan Book 2 and can be enjoyed independently.

    Where there’s smoke, there’s murder.
As the sun dips toward the horizon at Dee’s Dock, a yacht ignites more than just the evening sky— it sparks yet another deadly mystery on Shadow Island. Sheriff Rebecca West leads the charge as the tight-knit community bands together to battle the blaze. But as the smoke clears, a chilling discovery is made... arson is only the beginning, and the charred remains aboard signal murder.
Was the fire the ultimate goal, or was the blaze a smokescreen for a much darker deed?
Unfortunately, there are no witnesses to the crime. To make matters worse, the incident has triggered an FBI investigation into the increase in crimes on the island since Rebecca became sheriff.
Rebecca knows the spate of crimes is the result of her kicking the beehive of the previously untouchable Yacht Club, and she suspects this case is no different. Of the three boats damaged by the fire, two belong to blue-collar business owners. The other belongs to a member of the Yacht Club.
The plot thickens when the leading suspect is found executed, forcing Rebecca and her team to sift through the ashes for answers. With every clue leading to more danger, they must catch a killer amidst the crosshairs of corruption before Shadow Island is consumed by the inferno of its own secrets.
From the tense beginning to the explosive conclusion, Shadow’s Flame—the eleventh book in the Shadow Island Series by Mary Stone and Lori Rhodes—will draw you in like a moth to a flame. Just don’t get burned.
