Though brief in length, George Eliot’s (Mary Ann Evans) Silas Marner is a beautifully nuanced tale. It touches on many themes such as social acceptance, the harshness of legalistic religion, the equally harsh consequences of familial expectations and the power of a simple but fierce redemptive love.
The touching story is gently unfolded by Eliot in writing which beautifully captures the tragic disfunctions of the Cass family and the humorous characters of Raveloe who slowly grow to accept the strange Weaver in their midst. At its heart is Silas Marner himself, enigmatic and remote to those who don’t know him, but we who are allowed to glimpse his bruised heart, know that restoration may still be his.
Head Stories Audio presents Silas Marner by George Eliot. Narrated by Simon Hester. With original music.

William Butler Yeats was born in Sandymount in County Dublin, Ireland on 13th June 1865.
His early years moved between Ireland and England. By his mid-teens he was writing but those works were described as ‘entirely Un-Irish’. With Ernest Rhys he founded the Rhymers Club. Based at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese in Fleet Street it’s best described as a drinking club for performing poets. Yeats later cited them as ‘The Tragic Generation’. By now Yeats was writing and publishing poetry and stories that were profoundly based in Irish folklore.
Yeats is perhaps best described as Ireland’s national poet in addition to being one of the major twentieth-century literary figures of the English tongue. He represents the ‘Romantic poet of modernism,’ with an extraordinary style created from the outward emphasis on the expression of emotions and the extensive use of symbolism, imagery and allusions.
In 1923 his fame was brought to an even wider audience when he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.
His personal life was driven by his many relationships in love and by his great interest in oriental mysticism and occultism. Yeats also wrote prose and drama and, as an ardent Nationalist, established himself as a spokesman of the Irish cause and served as an Irish senator for two terms.
W B Yeats died at the Hôtel Idéal Séjour, in Menton, France, on 28th January 1939. He was 73.

The Hammer of God," readers are surprised to learn from Father Brown that the murderer is not a violent madman but rather a very respected member of the community. The Reverend Wilfred Bohun could no longer stand the scandalous behavior of his alcoholic brother Norman, who blasphemed God and humiliated the Reverend Bohun in the eyes of his parishioners. Chesterton states that Wilfred and Norman Bohun belong to an old noble family whose descendants are now mostly "drunkards and dandy degenerates." Rumor has it that there has been "a whisper of insanity" in the Bohun family.

"The Voyage Out" is the debut novel written by Virginia Woolf, a prominent English modernist writer. Published in 1915, the novel follows the journey of Rachel Vinrace, a young woman who embarks on a voyage to South America with her aunt and uncle. The novel explores themes of self-discovery, social conventions, and the constraints placed upon women in early 20th-century society.

As Rachel sets sail on her voyage, she encounters a diverse group of passengers, each representing different social classes, backgrounds, and personalities. Through her interactions with them, Rachel undergoes a transformative journey of personal growth and awakening. Woolf skillfully captures Rachel's internal thoughts and emotions, delving into her inner world as she navigates her way through the complexities of life and relationships.

"The Voyage Out" also provides a critical examination of societal norms and gender roles during the Edwardian era. Woolf challenges the traditional expectations placed upon women and explores the limitations and frustrations they face. Rachel's journey serves as a metaphor for breaking free from societal constraints and seeking personal fulfillment and independence.

Virginia Woolf's writing style in "The Voyage Out" is characterized by its lyrical prose, stream-of-consciousness narrative technique, and keen observations of human psychology. Through vivid descriptions and introspective passages, Woolf explores themes of identity, love, and the search for meaning in a rapidly changing world
    .
"The Voyage Out" is a significant novel in Woolf's body of work and serves as a precursor to her later, more experimental novels. It provides an early glimpse into Woolf's mastery of character development, psychological insight, and her unique literary style that would go on to shape the landscape of modernist literature.

Lucy Maud Montgomery (November 30, 1874 - April 24, 1942), published as L. M. Montgomery, was a Canadian author best known for a series of novels beginning in 1908 with Anne of Green Gables. The book was an immediate success. The title character, orphan Anne Shirley, made Montgomery famous in her lifetime and gave her an international following.
The Genesis of the Doughnut Club: When John Henry died there seemed to be nothing for me to do but pack up and go back east. I didn't want to do it, but forty-five years of sojourning in this world have taught me that a body has to do a good many things she doesn't want to do, and that most of them turn out to be for the best in the long run.
