Sinossi

A “multilayered comic masterpiece” by the National Book Award–winning master of wildly inventive contemporary fiction (Library Journal).   John Barth stays true to form in Every Third Thought, written from the perspective of a character Barth introduced in his short story collection The Development. George I. Newett and his wife Amanda Todd lived in the gated community of Heron Bay Estates until its destruction by a fluke tornado. This event, Newett notes, occurred on the 77th anniversary of the 1929 stock market crash, a detail that would appear insignificant if it were not for several subsequent events. The stress of the tornado’s devastation prompts the Newett-Todds to depart on a European vacation, during which George suffers a fall on none other than his 77th birthday, the first day of autumn (or more cryptically, Fall). Following this coincidence, George experiences the first of what is to become five serial visions, each appearing to him on the first day of the ensuing seasons, and each corresponding to a pivotal event in that season of his life. As the novel unfolds, so do these uncanny coincidences, and it is clear that, as ever, Barth possesses an unmatched talent in balancing his characteristic style and wit with vivid, page-turning storytelling.   “Every Third Thought has more to say about life, death, the ‘human condition,’ and maybe most particularly and surprisingly the deathlessness of love . . . than an entire constellation of newer, prettier literary lights.” —Los Angeles Review of Books   “Barth delivers yet another playful romp through the lives of characters both imprisoned and liberated by their constant urge to tell stories in language that shifts shape as constantly as their lives shift spaces . . . [A] multilayered comic masterpiece.” —Library Journal   “Flares of outrage over war and politics mix with funny bits about e-technology and struggles with the muse, and unabashed gratitude for friendship, the abiding love of a smart spouse, and the depthless pleasure and solace of story.” —Booklist

In Due Time begins outside a Philadelphia courthouse when Ryan Coleman is kidnapped and delivered to a luxury yacht off the coast of Florida, where his billionaire mentor, Randy Hollis, has decided that Ryan will become his one and only heir to his legacy and fortune. Ryan thinks he has been framed him for the death of Lisa O, the world’s number one escort, despite his plan to save Hollis and himself from being disbarred and going to prison. This turn of events sends Coleman into a frenzy as he navigates his sudden rise to power while discovering that his best friend and wife are shacking up together. When tragedy strikes, Coleman is suddenly left to his own devices and must choose his path forward. Will he take the advice of his mother and a newly rekindled love story, or turn to the dark side as he witnessed with several masters of the universe in his orbit? While Ryan Coleman was once thought by everyone to be naïve and in over his head, easy to manipulate and even frame, in Book Two he becomes the rainmaker, at least until the end, when he ends up right back where he started.

Oscar Wilde created his final and most lasting play, comic masterpieces of all time, The Importance of Being Earnest, in 1895. Considered one of the greatest, The Importance of Being Earnest is a farce, playing with love, religion, and truth as it tells the tale of two men. Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who bend the truth in order to add excitement to their lives. Jack invents an imaginary brother, Ernest, whom he uses as an excuse to escape from his dull country home and gallavant in town. Meanwhile, Algernon follows Jack's scam, but his imaginary friend, Bumbury, provides a convenient method of adventuring in the country. However, their deceptions eventually cross paths, resulting in a series of crises that threaten to spoil their romantic pursuits. Hailed as the first modern comedy in England, The Importance of Being Earnest is Wilde's most famous work.

A pig escapes from its pen and roots up the garden of Kitty McCloud, a bestselling novelist who "corrects" the classics. What the obstreperous little pig unearths is evidence of a possible transgression that the novel's three Irish characters—the plagiarizing Kitty, her blood-feud rival Kieran, and a sexy swineherd named Lolly—are convinced the other has probably benefited from. How this hilarious mystery is resolved inspires both comic eloquence and a theatrically colorful canvas depicting the brooding Irish land and seascape.

With no party having a majority it was decided the position of First Minister should go to neutral, AGSTLO (Ah m Gonnae Sort This Lot Oot party) MSP, Big Nellie Nellis, a controversial imposing lady with the relics of beauty still on her face, unapologetically long legs which look as though they could stretch into different time zones, and bosoms requiring their own postal codes. Her over-bearing appearance and vibrancy, assisted by a continually refilled hip flask of single malt, make her formidable to all and sundry. Forget Mrs Thatcher, Mrs Merkel, Mrs Gillard, Mrs Meir and Ms Sturgeon. These women were absolute softies compared to Big Nellie.

When Big Nellie Nellis bounds into Scottish politics after a fish supper and a cockup too far, her brash reason wins an electorate weary of the pointless jabbering of a divided Parliament. However, shaking up the status quo of Holyrood sets some slippery MSPs delving into Nellie s past to uncover the truth about Scotland s least likely political leader.
