Sinossi

In "Erasmus and the Age of Reformation," Johan Huizinga provides an astute analysis of the intellectual landscape during one of history's pivotal epochs. Huizinga masterfully intertwines historical narrative with a deep literary analysis, offering insights into the life and works of Desiderius Erasmus, a central figure in Renaissance humanism. The book is characterized by a rich, reflective prose that captures the era's complexities while contextualizing Erasmus' contributions vis-à-vis the burgeoning Reformation. Huizinga situates Erasmus not merely as a precursor to Protestant thought but as a nuanced thinker grappling with the tensions of faith, humanism, and societal change, demonstrating how the scholar navigated an age rife with both enlightenment and turmoil. Johan Huizinga, a prominent Dutch historian, is renowned for his interdisciplinary approach that merges history, culture, and philosophy. His extensive studies in the humanities and his fascination with cultural phenomena deeply informed his writings. Having lived through the tumult of both World Wars, Huizinga was particularly attuned to the shifts in human thought and behavior, prompting him to explore the influence of intellectual figures like Erasmus on modernity and subsequent societal changes. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in the intersections of religion, philosophy, and history, particularly those wishing to understand the undercurrents that shaped early modern Europe. Huizinga's compelling narrative not only illuminates Erasmus' legacy but also encourages readers to reflect on the broader ideals of humanism amid a rapidly changing world.

    *40th anniversary audio edition*
In April 1982 Harry Benson was a 21 year-old Royal Navy commando helicopter pilot, fresh out of training and one of the youngest helicopter pilots to serve in the Falklands War. These pilots, nicknamed 'junglies', flew most of the land-based missions in the Falklands in their Sea King and Wessex helicopters. Much of what happened in the war -- the politics, task force ships, Sea Harriers, landings, Paras and Marines -- is well-known and documented. But almost nothing is known of the young commando helicopter pilots and aircrewmen who made it all happen on land and sea. This is their 'Boys Own' story, told for the very first time.
Harry Benson has interviewed forty of his former colleagues for the book creating a tale of skill, initiative, resourcefulness, humour, luck, and adventure. This is a fast-paced, meticulously researched and compelling account written by someone who was there, in the cockpit of a Wessex helicopter.
None of these pilots has spoken before about:
    - The two helicopter crashes and eventual rescue following a failed SAS mission high up on an in hospitable glacier in South Georgia
    - The harrowing story of the Exocet strike that sunk the transport ship Atlantic Conveyor
    - The daring missile raid on the Argentine high command in Port Stanley
    - The constant mortar fire faced while supporting troops and evacuating casualties
    - The hair-raising head-on attacks by Argentine jets on British helicopters
    - The extraordinary courage shown during the evacuation of the bombed landing ship 'Sir Galahad'
If you liked Apache, Vulcan 607 and Chickenhawk, you'll love Scram! The word "Scram" was coined by Falklands helicopter pilots to warn other 'junglies' to go to ground or risk being shot down as Argentinean jets blasted through 'bomb alley'. The term has never been used before or since.

Louisa May Alcott´s Little Women is the author´s love song for German culture and literature. In the novel, there are many moments when the characters make references to German literature, and Jo's love interest professor Bhaer is also based on Alcott's favourite writer, the German poet Goethe. When Friedrich helps Jo when she struggles writing to Weekly Volcano, we can see her influences from Goethe, Friedrich recommends Jo read Shakespeare and study characters like Goethe would have done. It is also remarkable that Alcott gives Jo a German love interest because German immigrants were widely discriminated in 19th century America, but in Concord where Alcott's resided there was a full-blown German epidemic with people rushing to buy German books and anything that came from Germany.
In the very first chapter of Little Women Jo wishes for a copy of Undine and Sintram as a Christmas present. Undine and Sintram is a collection of Scandinavian and Germanic fables written by French-German author Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué. This book appears again in the last Little Women book, Jo´s boys. Marches help the poor Hummel family who has immigrated from Germany. Beth and Marmee are especially close to them. Beth catches terrible scarlet fever, but the Marches never blame the Hummels. Epidemic diseases were rather common back then and Louisa always writes about the Hummels with great sympathy. In the chapter "Camp Lawrence" John Brooke translates a German song for Meg and reads her parts from "Mary Stuart", a play that was written by German poet and philosopher Friedrich Schiller. At Meg´s and John´s wedding, Laurie suggests that they dance as the Germans do.

Out-of-control debt. Populism. Political vitriol and corruption. Where did America go wrong? Or rather, when did America go wrong?

1913. The Seventeenth Amendment is ratified, allowing the people of America to vote directly for their senators in the US senate. The same year, the Federal Reserve Act is passed, establishing a central bank to oversee monetary policy. In The Illusory Bargain, Ralph H. Lehman demonstrates that these seemingly empowering and people-serving pieces of legislature were just that-an illusion. Tracing the vision of the Founding Fathers as outlined in The Federalist Papers, Lehman reveals how the safety features of the original constitutional framework have eroded since and given way to rampant abuse of power and arbitrary, tyrannical law.

Through fresh, historically informed insights and over twenty years of financial expertise, Lehman reexamines the nation's fundamental values and proposes what may be the only course of action left to restore our liberty.

So, how can you help your child overcome these sensory sensitivities and ensure that they get the nourishment they need?

Written by a pediatric occupational therapist with a specialty certification in feeding, eating, and swallowing, Raising Adventurous Eaters offers eight evidence-based sensory strategies to help kids foster a healthy relationship with food.
