Sinossi

'All of human history? It's basically people taking things from each other.'
A thousand-year-old statue of the Bodhisattva Guanyin lives in the British Museum. When it emerges that the statue was stolen from its original home, the museum attempts to deflect both the public response and controversial repatriation claims from the Chinese government.
As statesmen scheme and grease their palms, beneath the statue, witches dance, a cleaner prays, and spirits weep.
Joel Tan's daring, shape-shifting play unfolds the statue's journey from China to Britain and back again, stirring up age-old ghosts and asking who can claim cultural artefacts – and why?
Scenes from a Repatriation was first performed at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in 2025, directed by experimental theatre-makers emma + pj.
Disponibile da: 08/05/2025.
Lunghezza di stampa: 128 pagine.

They say you can’t catch a fish with a hook.

It’s 1925, a world on the cusp of change. Hitler has published Mein Kampf and Mussolini has shut down the free press in Italy.

Three friends meet on a Scottish estate for a weekend of salmon fishing and convivial conversation over brandy and cigars: Winston Churchill, future world leader, ‘Bendor’, 2nd Duke of Westminster and Coco Chanel, iconic fashion entrepreneur. The narrative develops into a visceral account interspersed with sharp and insightful humour, revealing two men whose deep friendship is divided by their profound political differences, as each of them tries to navigate an uncertain world.

And then there is Coco Chanel, also an accomplished angler and Bendor’s mistress. She enters wearing furs and exits wearing waders.

In Winston & The Duke, Rory Fellowes delivers a thought-provoking play that invites the audience to question:
Have we learned anything from history?Should we pay attention to past events rather than purge them for comfort’s sake? Can controversial friendships exist openly and provoke change in today’s political arena?

That is for the listener to decide.

Winston & The Duke was developed through WIN: Writers Innovative Network and was directed by Maureen Payne-Hahner.

Prime Minister Robert Saleh feels helpless as his economy stagnates year after year. When a representative of the shadowy organization known as Armageddon offers funding for several national-level infrastructure projects, he can’t resist signing an overly expansive contract. News of this secret agreement, which includes a level of mercenary support for national security, sparks international concern.
Saleh hopes to play Armageddon’s investments against those of Australia and the United States, who’d focused their interest and resources elsewhere. Unfortunately, the cash flowing into Saleh’s pockets blinds him to the devastating consequences he’d unilaterally set in motion.
Gar Randolph and his ever-changing team of technical experts receive the call to keep an eye on things. “Remain unseen and unnoticed. More importantly, neutralize anything that isn’t in the best interest of the Saintly Islands.”
Events escalate until Gar takes decisive action.

The language of Poetry is an art that most of us attempt at some point in our lives. Although its commonplace exposure has been somewhat marginalised in today’s often fast-paced lives we all recognise good verse that can empathise with our thoughts or open us up to experience new things in new ways, to better understand and to enjoy the many strands of our lives.
But finding a starting point can be overwhelming, even off-putting, so in this series we offer up our Top 10 classic poets, who brim with talent and verse, on a range of subjects and themes that we can all enjoy.
The poetess may have lived in the constancy and overbearing shadows of their male colleagues but their verse is the equal of each and every man, whoever they may be. Their words do not surrender to pity or lack of self-esteem, but are glowing tributes to the talents of humanity despite the shadows that often clouded their lives.

A Debut collection from Black British poet A J Akoto. When is a mother a myth, and when is she a monster?
In an intimate and unflinching collection, A J Akoto tracks the complex bind of mother-daughter relationships. Through separation and attempts to mend, longing, and the fluidity of myth/story-telling in defining histories and identities, she collapses the elision between womanhood and motherhood/daughterhood, bringing to the forefront that which usually remains unspoken.
