Sinossi

'Joel Lane's imagination is bleak. But it is also the imagination of a poet.'

– M John Harrison, author of The Sunken Land Begins to Rise Again
WITH A NEW INTRODUCTION BY CONRAD WILLIAMS

Set in a post-industrial landscape of the present, the near future, and the imagined, Joel Lane's seminal collection The Lost District explores human encounters with the unknown: sexual discovery, drug-inspired visions, the lonely paths of madness, and the shadow realms on the other side of death.
A neighbourhood fades into corrupt echoes of itself; a porn actor's scars reveal the forces controlling his life; a musician is haunted by the madness of a deceased singer; and a man literally follows his ex-lover to the end of the world.

Ranging from grim urban horror to strange erotic fantasies to bitter allegories of loss and exploitation, the stories in The Lost District link the hidden places in the urban and small-town landscapes to the secret spaces inside all of us.
First published in the USA in 2006, and long out-of-print, The Lost District has never been published in the UK until now, further enforcing Joel Lane's reputation as one of the most significant and distinctive British writers of the weird.

    "What killed him?" asked Reynard.
"We don't know it seems like it may have been a dark enchantment," said Death.
"Oh?" said Reynard, "Yes what sort of enchantment?"
"We are reading up on it in our library of enchantments," said Death.
A grim reaper walked out of a dark portal between the dimensions of the living and the dead.
"Dante, hi," said Death to the reaper who was his assistant.
"Hi, Blake," said Dante the reaper.
    "Anything new?" asked Death.
"Yes we found the spell," said Dante.
    "What was it?" asked Death.
"It came from the Book of Death," Dante said.
"You have a book?" said Reynard.
"No, its not my book! It's the Egyptian Book of the Dead," said Death.
    "It's real?" asked Reynard.
    "Yes," said Dante.
"Is it a rogue reaper killing people?" asked Reynard.
"No it could be anyone it was lost ages ago?" said Death.
    "Where?" asked Reynard.
    "We don't know?" said Death.
"How could you lose a cursed book?" asked Reynard shocked.
"We don't know it was lost," said Death.
Reynard understood, but felt no comfort that a killer had it now.

The name Poe brings to mind images of murderers and madmen, premature burials, and mysterious women who return from the dead What a scary read. Egaeus, the narrator, talks about his relationship to his cousin Berenice. He lives the life of a scholar, prefers the night and is quite sickly. Berenice is the counterpart until she fall ill an decays day by day. There are plans of marriage. Egaeus is obsessed by her teeth. When the day of her interment is over a shadowy shrouded figure is reported. What about the teeth? A very morbid story, full of decay, visions of grey and unsound living in the dark. Frightening and recommended!
Berenice" is a short horror story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe, first published in the Southern Literary Messenger in 1835. The story is narrated by Egaeus, who is preparing to marry his cousin Berenice. He tends to fall into periods of intense focus, during which he seems to separate himself from the outside world. Berenice begins to deteriorate from an unnamed disease until only her teeth remain healthy. Egaeus obsesses over them. When Berenice is buried, he continues to contemplate her teeth. One day, he awakens with an uneasy feeling from a trance-like state and hears screams. A servant reports that Berenice's grave has been disturbed, and she is still alive. Beside Egaeus is a shovel, a poem about "visiting the grave of my beloved", and a box containing 32 teeth.
Contemporary readers were horrified by the story's violence and complained to the editor of the Messenger. Although Poe later published a self-censored version of the work, he believed the story should be judged solely by how many copies it sold.

"The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James is a gothic novella written in the late 19th century. The story centers around a young governess who is assigned to care for two orphaned children at a remote English estate called Bly, where strange and unsettling events occur, raising questions about both the environment and the children themselves.
At the beginning of the novella, a group of friends gathers around a fire on Christmas Eve. During their conversation, they discuss ghostly experiences. One of the members, Douglas, hints at a chilling tale involving two children and a dreadful apparition that appeared to them. This sets the stage for the governess's recounting of her experiences at Bly.
Upon her arrival at the estate, she is captivated by the beauty of the children, Miles and Flora. However, beneath this charm lies an unsettling tension, particularly related to the previous governess, who died under mysterious circumstances. The opening sequence effectively builds an atmosphere of suspense, promising a haunting exploration of innocence, corrupted motives, and the supernatural.
