"Love and Friendship" is a novella by Jane Austen that explores the themes of love, friendship, and the societal expectations that govern relationships in the early 19th century. The narrative unfolds through the protagonist, Laura, who recounts her experiences and relationships in a series of letters. Austen's narrative is characterized by its wit and satire, as she keenly observes the manners and morals of the time. Through Laura's voice, the reader is taken on a journey that navigates the complexities of romantic entanglements and the consequences of societal pressures.

The novella delves into the consequences of impulsive decisions and the societal expectations placed on women to secure advantageous marriages. Austen uses humor and irony to expose the absurdities of the social norms and conventions that govern the characters' lives. As Laura navigates the challenges of love and friendship, Austen skillfully weaves a narrative that explores the tension between individual desires and societal expectations. The characters' flaws are exposed, highlighting the limitations placed on personal freedom in a society where social standing and financial considerations often take precedence over matters of the heart.

In "Love and Friendship," Austen's narrative mastery shines through as she crafts a tale that not only entertains but also offers a subtle commentary on the constraints of the society in which her characters live. The exploration of love and friendship serves as a lens through which Austen examines the intricacies of human relationships, making the novella a timeless and insightful exploration of the human condition.

'I had rather die in the adventure of noble achievements, than live in obscure and sluggish security.'

Part romance, part adventure story, The Blazing World is a seventeenth century classic, and a prime example of proto-science fiction.

Often considered an early feminist work, Cavendish compellingly chronicles how a young Lady became a powerful empress of a fantastical parallel kingdom. Captured by a lustful merchant in the hope of marrying the young woman, we first find our protagonist travelling towards the North Pole, unsure of her future. But soon the merchant and his crew freeze to death, allowing the young Lady to escape and discover a pole to an alternative land: the Blazing World. Here, the laws of science and nature are upturned: peculiar hybrid creatures – with animal bodies but minds like humans – inhabit the kingdom. Believed to be a goddess by the Emperor of Paradise city, the young woman soon becomes betrothed to the leader of the strange land, and is able to rule and govern the world as she pleases. This audiobook edition is brilliantly brought to life by Karen Cass.
Margaret Cavendish (1632 – 1673), Duchess of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was a successful poet, playwright, scientist and philosopher. She was one of the first women of her time to publish extensively under her own name, and used her work to explore topics such as gender, marriage and courtship.

The Happy Family (1848): The largest green leaf in this country is certainly the burdock-leaf. If you hold it in front of you, it is large enough for an apron; and if you hold it over your head, it is almost as good as an umbrella, it is so wonderfully large. A burdock never grows alone; where it grows, there are many more, and it is a splendid sight; and all this splendor is good for snails. The great white snails, which grand people in olden times used to have made into fricassees; and when they had eaten them, they would say, "O, what a delicious dish!" for these people really thought them good; and these snails lived on burdock-leaves, and for them the burdock was planted...

Alfred McLelland Burrage was born in Hillingdon, Middlesex on 1st July, 1889. His father and uncle were both writers, primarily of boy’s fiction, and by age 16 AM Burrage had joined them. The young man had ambitions to write for the adult market too. The money was better and so was his writing.
From 1890 to 1914, prior to the mainstream appeal of cinema and radio the printed word, mainly in magazines, was the foremost mass entertainment. AM Burrage quickly became a master of the market publishing his stories regularly across a number of publications.
By the start of the Great War Burrage was well established but in 1916 he was conscripted to fight on the Western Front. He continued to write during these years documenting his experiences in the classic book War is War by Ex-Private X.
For the remainder of his life Burrage was rarely printed in book form but continued to write and be published on a prodigious scale in magazines and newspapers. In this volume we concentrate on his supernatural stories which are, by common consent, some of the best ever written. Succinct yet full of character each reveals a twist and a flavour that is unsettling…..sometimes menacing….always disturbing.
