Sinossi

'These poems are shaped by the mundane and the extraordinary, all in rhythmic patterns and music that form a chorus from the first to the last poem. Her poems are intimate observations and explorations of the common aspects of our lives, reflections on our ancestry, and on the power of the poetic voice to understand who we have been and who we are now. In these lucid poems, the reader will find the power that drives this dynamic poetic voice.' - Mary-Jane Grandinetti, Editor Shot Glass Journal and Fib Review

Too structured to fall into the category of grunge poetry; low on literary worth, but high on story telling. I call my poetry, ‘Gippsland Shabby Chic Verse’. It’s raw, uncomplicated, tells a story in simple language that is easy to read. And most of it rhymes! Hopefully, my poems will take my reader on an emotional journey to experience what makes beautiful Lakes Entrance and East Gippsland unique amongst places. This is a book of collected poems of time and place, compiled in the season of the coronavirus 2020, during lockdown. ‘You can take the girl out of Lakes Entrance, but you can’t take Lakes Entrance out of the girl.’

Pippa Passes was a dramatic piece, as much play as poetry, by Robert Browning published in 1841 as the first volume of his Bells and Pomegranates series. The author described the work as the first of a series of dramatic pieces. His original idea was of a young, innocent girl, moving unblemished through the crime-ridden neighbourhoods of Asolo. The work caused outrage when it was first published, due to the matter-of-fact portrayals of many of the area's more disreputable characters – notably the adulterous Ottima – and for its frankness on sexual matters. Perhaps the most famous passage is below:The year's at the spring,And day's at the morn;Morning's at seven; The hill-side's dew-pearled;The lark's on the wing; The snail's on the thorn;God's in his Heaven - All's right with the world! The Imagists - A poetry...

In the early 1900s a new movement in poetry began. With the new century came new thinking, a reaction to both romanticism and the more formal, structured poetry of the Victorian era. Here was poetry designed to be simple, clear and precise, rather than be adorned and encrusted with more from the lexicon than what was actually needed.

The original ideas sprang from T. E Hulme and from these Ezra Pound created the structure for its development. Akin to the Ancient Greek lyricists and the Japanese Haiku poets who went from fixed meters to free verse.

    I. Direct treatment of the “thing," whether subjective or objective. II. To use absolutely no word that does not contribute to the presentation. III. As regarding rhythm: to compose in sequence of the musical phrase, not in sequence of the metronome.

Hilda Doolittle (H.D.) William Carlos Williams, Richard Aldington and James Joyce added their talents to an anthology edited by Pound, swiftly followed by Amy Lowell assuming leadership and adding both monies and 3 further anthology volumes. By the end of the Great War in 1918 the movement was being absorbed into the broader modernist movement. Its time may have passed but its indelible mark was made.

Euripides' classic tragedy in a full cast audio production. After Troy fell to the Greeks, Andromache, the wife of the slain Trojan king Hector, was taken as prize and given to Achilles' son Neoptolemus as his concubine. He treated her kindly, and in the fullness of time she bore him a son. But Neoptolemus went on to take as his wife Hermione, the daughter of Menelaus, but she could bear him no children. Enraged with jealousy, Hermione plots the death of Andromache, and the play opens with Andromache taking sanctuary at the temple of Thetis, the goddess who is also Achilles' mother - Achilles, the man who killed her husband.

    - A Poetry Society Recommendation
    - A Guardian Poetry Book of the Year
    - One of The Telegraph's Best Poetry Books of 2019A knife is pulled. An Uber driver is racially abused on the day of the Brexit referendum. A father bathes his son in ice water. A schoolboy drives a drawing pin into a map of the world. The threat of violence is never far away in Anthony Anaxagorou's breakthrough collection After the Formalities. Technically achieved, emotionally transformative and razor-sharp, these are poems that confront and contradict; poems in which the scholarly synthesises with the streetwise, and global histories are told through the lens of one family.
Anaxagorou 'speaks against the darkness', tracking the male body under pressure from political and historical forces, and celebrates the precarious joy of parenthood. The title poem is a meditation on racism and race science that draws on the poet's Cypriot heritage and is as uncomfortable as it is virtuosic. Elsewhere, in a sequence of prose poems that shimmer with lyric grace, he writes, 'I'm your father & the only person keeping you alive.'
