Stewardship is a comprehensive approach to management that emphasizes responsible care and accountability for the resources entrusted to individuals, organizations, and communities. At its core, stewardship requires an understanding of both the tangible and intangible values of these resources and a commitment to ensuring they are used in a manner that preserves their potential for future generations. This chapter explores the historical evolution, philosophical underpinnings, and modern applications of stewardship, offering readers a solid grounding in the fundamental principles that guide responsible management.
Historically, the concept of stewardship can be traced back to ancient civilizations where caring for community resources was integral to societal survival and growth. Early cultures recognized the importance of balancing consumption with preservation, creating frameworks that emphasized duty, trust, and ethical responsibility. As societies evolved, these early principles laid the groundwork for more complex systems of governance and ethical management, adapting to meet the challenges of rapidly changing environments. This evolution underscores that stewardship is not a static concept but a dynamic practice that reflects the values and needs of the times.
In today’s world, stewardship extends far beyond basic resource management. It embraces sustainable practices, ethical leadership, and a long-term vision necessary for navigating the complexities of modern challenges in finance, the environment, and social structures. Central to this approach is the belief that effective management involves a deep respect for all resources—natural, financial, and human—and a commitment to their wise utilization. By integrating time-honored values with contemporary techniques, stewardship creates resilient frameworks that enable organizations to adapt to change while maintaining their core principles.

»We are at a turning point in human history. To stop climate breakdown and extinction, environmental movements need to be actively anti-racist and join struggles for social justice.«Carola RacketeIn 2019, Carola Rackete became publicly known for docking the sea rescue vessel »Sea-Watch 3« in Italy and thereby challenging a nationaldecree that contradicted internationalobligations to engage in sea rescue. Due to this act of civil disobedience and her public confrontation of the Italian far right and the structural racism of the EU's Fortress Europe policy, Carola became a powerful symbol for people seeking to take practical action for a world based on justice and equality. Carola has worked in the polar regions since 2011 and holds a degree in natural resources management. Consequently, her book shows how the ecological crises we are facing today are rooted in social and political power structures. The book details moments of the rescue mission but also connects the dots to forced migration and the urgency of our environmental predicament. Overall, it is a call to engage and act to become part of initiatives and movements struggling for social and environmental justice. This version of the book includes a new afterword focused on centring justice and human rights in nature and biodiversity conservation-a topic often overlooked by climate activists in the Global North. The authors will donate the revenue from this book to the association borderline-europe-Menschenrechte ohne Grenzen e.V. in order to launch a new criminalization fund. The money from this fund will be used to support refugees who are criminalized in the EU for fleeingtoEurope.Acknowledgements: This audio book has been made possible by the voluntary contributions of many people, most notably Marysa Abbas who is the voiceover artist of this audioproject, Diane Hielscher who provided her studio "LifeX Lab-wir machen Medien für eine neue Welt" for the recordings and production, Céline Keller who contributed the cover art, Alfio Furnari from Borderline-Europe who managed administration and contracts, the management of liberaudio as well as Anne Weiss who got the projectrolling and connected everyone. In Spain: What Everyone Needs to Know®, a timely addition to Oxford's What Everyone Needs to Know® series, veteran journalist William Chislett provides political and historical context for Spain's current economic and political predicament. Chislett recounts the country's fascinating and often turbulent history, beginning with the Muslim conquest in 711 and ending with the nation's deep economic crisis, sparked by the spectacular collapse of its real estate and construction sectors in 2010. He explains the country's transition from dictatorship to democracy and covers such issues as the creation of a welfare state, the influx of immigrants, internal strife from the separatist Catalan region, the effects of stringent austerity measures, the strengths and weaknesses of the economy, and how the country can create a more sustainable economic model for the future. In a concise, question-and-answer format that allows listeners to quickly access areas of particular interest, the book addresses a wide range of questions, including: What was the legacy of the Muslim presence between 711 and 1492? How did the Spanish Empire Arise? What were the causes of the 1936-39 Civil War? Why did the Socialists win a landslide victory in the 1982 election? What was the impact of European Economic Community membership? What is the violent Basque separatist group ETA? And more.

    Emotional Abuse - Inflicting...

Emotional abuse is one of the most insidious forms of mistreatment, often leaving deep psychological wounds that are not immediately visible. Unlike physical abuse, which leaves external scars, emotional abuse erodes a person’s sense of self-worth, independence, and emotional stability over time. It can occur in various relationships, including romantic partnerships, family dynamics, friendships, workplaces, and even societal structures. Understanding what emotional abuse is, how it manifests, and the long-term effects it has on victims is essential for recognizing and addressing it.
At its core, emotional abuse is a pattern of behavior aimed at controlling, belittling, or manipulating another person through psychological means. This can include gaslighting, where the abuser makes the victim question their own reality, constant criticism that undermines self-confidence, and emotional withholding, where love and affection are used as tools for control. Unlike one-time conflicts or disagreements, emotional abuse is a repeated, systematic approach that leaves the victim feeling trapped, powerless, and unworthy.
One of the most damaging aspects of emotional abuse is that it often happens gradually, making it difficult for victims to recognize. Many victims rationalize or minimize their experiences, believing that they are overreacting or that the abuser’s behavior is justified. Emotional abusers often shift blame onto their victims, making them feel responsible for the mistreatment. This cycle of manipulation creates emotional dependency, where the victim feels unable to leave the abusive situation due to fear, guilt, or the hope that things will improve.
