    Embracing the Void - Rethinking...

A radical reinterpretation of the origin of religion through a psychoanalytic theorization of the unknown

Renowned psychoanalytic philosopher Richard Boothby puts forward a novel theory of religion inspired by Jacques Lacan's theory of das Ding, the disquieting, inaccessible dimension of fellow human beings. This notion of an unfathomable excess, originally encountered in the figure of the mother, led Lacan to break with Freud's formulation of the Oedipus complex and underlies Lacan's distinctive conception of unconscious dynamics. Leaning on this account, Boothby shows how our sense of the sacred arises from our relation to what we do not know.

Embracing the Void lays out the range of Freud's attempts at a psychoanalytic theory of religion and then sketches the rough contours of Lacan's contrasting approach. From there, Boothby offers the theoretical tools for interpreting the religious impulse and analyzes key religious traditions, from ancient Greek polytheism to Judaism and Christianity, and from Hinduism and Buddhism to Islam, finally turning to modern capitalist culture and the seductive deity that dominates it—money. Lucid, accessible, and compelling, the book provides a cogent intervention in one of the psychoanalytic tradition's most contentious topics and offers a new approach to our understanding of religion.

The Women, but Stronger reimagines the story of war, courage, and memory from the voices history silenced. It’s not a retelling of battles, but of what comes after — the quiet labor of survival, the invisible architecture of care, and the unacknowledged strength that rebuilt the world. With lyrical prose and sociological depth, it explores how the myths of heroism have erased the emotional truth of endurance, and how women have always carried civilization through its darkest hours. A powerful, contemplative book about resilience, silence, and the radical act of compassion in a world that glorifies conquest.

    Gestapo - The Story Behind...

Formed in 1933, the Gestapo became one of the most feared state forces of the Third Reich before and during World War II.

Chronicling the history of the organization, from its origins to the brutal and horrific offences that it perpetrated on hundreds of thousands of people, to its eventual downfall, Gestapo is a compelling tale of power and destruction taken to their most terrifying extremes. Familiar in films as the ominous men wearing black leather trench coats seen arresting people on the flimsiest of pretexts, the true story of the Geheime Staatspolizei (or Gestapo for short) is even more frightening.

Drawing on numerous sources, Gestapo explores how this secret state police force was born on 26 April 1933, the creation of Hermann Göring. Together with the Kriminalpolizei and the Sicherheitsdienst, the Gestapo would enforce a reign of terror on Germany and across much of Europe. Containing profiles of key figures and chilling tales of its death squads' sadistic efficiency - from the torture of Resistance members to mass murder in collaboration with the Einsatzgruppen - Gestapo shows how the organization thrived on Hitler's insecurity until, as the Allies triumphed, its members were eventually rounded up and, as far as possible, brought to justice.

    The 19th-Century Famines in...

In the 19th century, Finland was a region undergoing profound political, social, and economic transformation. Following centuries of Swedish rule, Finland was ceded to the Russian Empire in 1809, becoming an autonomous Grand Duchy under the Russian crown. This shift in governance marked a significant turning point in the nation's development, as it introduced new administrative structures and a degree of self-rule, yet still tied Finland’s fate closely to the broader political currents of imperial Russia. Despite this autonomy, many rural communities remained deeply influenced by traditional practices rooted in earlier Swedish governance and local customs.
Agriculture formed the backbone of the Finnish economy during this period, with the vast majority of the population engaged in farming or forestry. The rural landscape was dominated by small farms and tenant holdings, where subsistence farming was the norm. Crops such as rye, barley, and oats were staples, but yields were highly susceptible to environmental fluctuations. There was limited access to modern tools, techniques, or fertilizers, and storage methods were often inadequate, leaving communities vulnerable to failed harvests. The lack of agricultural diversity and technological stagnation only exacerbated the risks, particularly during years of poor weather or early frosts.
Economically, Finland was still in the early stages of development, with only a few urban centers and a limited industrial base. Trade remained modest, and most commerce was localized. The transportation infrastructure, particularly in the countryside, was underdeveloped, which made the movement of goods—especially food—slow and unreliable. The country’s dependence on its immediate environment for food and income meant that any disruption, whether climatic or political, could have devastating consequences. This fragility was compounded by population growth, which put increasing pressure on available land and resources.
