Sinossi

Cave Diving delves into the captivating world of underwater caves, blending Earth Sciences Geography and Adventure to uncover the mysteries hidden beneath the surface. These submerged environments offer unique insights into geological formations created through karstification and tectonic activity, acting as time capsules that preserve paleontological records and even traces of early human activity.

The book showcases the extreme environments and challenges faced by divers, while also highlighting the scientific discoveries made in these largely unexplored realms. Exploring cave ecosystems reveals unique adaptations of cave-dwelling organisms and the delicate balance within these subterranean habitats. Divers employ specialized diving techniques and equipment, including closed-circuit rebreather technologies, navigating confined spaces under immense pressure.

The book progresses from explaining the geomorphology of cave systems to examining human interaction, detailing the development of cave diving techniques and safety protocols. This book uniquely combines scientific rigor with compelling storytelling, avoiding sensationalism and instead focusing on the meticulous work of scientists and divers.

Cave Diving culminates with an examination of the environmental challenges facing these fragile ecosystems, emphasizing the importance of responsible exploration and cave conservation. It presents diverse perspectives and encourages readers to consider the ethical implications of exploring and documenting these pristine systems.

My Family and Other Enemies -...

    Mary Novakovich

My Family and Other Enemies is part travelogue, part memoir that dives into the hinterland of Croatia. Mary Novakovich explores her ongoing relationship with the region of Lika in central Croatia, where her parents were born. 'Lika is little known to most travellers - apart from Plitvice Lakes National Park and the birthplace of Nikola Tesla' she says. 'It's a region of wild beauty that has been battered by centuries of conflict. Used as a buffer zone between the Habsburg and Ottoman empires for hundreds of years, Lika became a land of war and warriors. And when Yugoslavia started to disintegrate in 1991, it was here where some of the first shots were fired.' Shipped off to Lika as a child during the supposedly golden years of Tito to stay with relatives she barely knew, Novakovich has been revisiting Croatia ever since, researching the story of her family's often harrowing life: in 1941 her aunt was the only survivor of Serbs massacred by Croatian fascists; and her mother saved her grandmother from being buried alive when she was thought to be dead from typhus. Amidst adversity there is resilience and laughter, too, with plenty of light to balance the shade. Eccentric and entertaining characters abound, showing typically sardonic Balkan humour. And, this being the Balkans, much of daily life revolves around food, which features prominently. Throughout, aspects of Croatian history that relate to Lika are woven into the narrative to give the story some much-needed context. And in recounting her own family's tumultuous history, Novakovich opens up a world that is little known outside the Balkans, telling the stories of people whose experiences weren't widely reported at the time, when the devastation in Croatia was superseded by the Bosnian conflict and media attention moved elsewhere.

"Every nation has its own way of celebrating, but England's pageantry is unmatched."

Mark Twain's Queen Victoria's Jubilee captures the splendour and sentimentality surrounding the celebration of the sixty years of Queen Victoria's reign in 1897. With his characteristic wit and keen social commentary, Twain reflects on the grandeur of the festivities and the deep emotional connection between the queen and her subjects, interweaving humour with poignant insights into British identity, tradition, and the complexity of monarchy in a rapidly changing world.
Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by his pen name Mark Twain (1835–1910), grew up along the banks of the Mississippi River, and his early experiences inspired many of his most famous works, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Widely celebrated as America's greatest humorist, Twain captured the spirit of a rapidly changing nation, and his sharp wit, keen eye for human nature, and gift for storytelling made him not only a beloved novelist but also a popular lecturer and essayist.

Twain's innovative style, character-driven storytelling and ability to interweave humour with profound social critique laid the groundwork for modern American literature and has inspired countless authors, including Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Indeed, Hemingway famously declared that "all modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn."
