Sinossi

A love too strong to be tamed: the true story of Tarzan, and the woman who loved him. In 1908, on a mission to find a new breed of ape in central Africa, an unfathomable thing is discovered—a wild, white man, living amongst gorillas. Local villagers call him matokeo ya utafutaji kwa, the untamed one.  Joining the team of hunters and trackers searching for matokeo ya utafutaji kwa is Arianna Day, the 21-year-old niece of the expedition’s leader. She catches the untamed one’s eye and, believing she is meant for him, he takes her captive and claims her for his own, body and soul. When Arianna is rescued, the untamed one is captured, and they are sent their separate ways: the wild man to learn language and social skills he’d long forgotten, Arianna back home to England to try to fit back into her old life. A promising marriage proposal awaits,   but thoughts of the untamed one haunts her. Amidst the backdrop of London in the summer of 1908, as the Olympic Games are hosted and the Franko-British Exhibition is held, the now-civilized wild man returns home, with his original name restored: Sebastian or ‘Zan' Shaffer. He and Arianna are drawn together again only to be ripped apart by social convention and Marshall Derringer, the man determined to have her as his wife.  But Zan is not the only one with an untamed heart…

From the creator of Sherlock Holmes, experience this close encounter with the supernatural.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel The Land of Mist continues the story of the fictional character Professor George Edward Challenger. It follows the first two books of the Professor Challenger series, originally published in Strand Magazine in the early 20th century: The Lost World and The Poison Belt.

The first book in the series, The Lost World, introduced readers to the intriguing character of Professor Challenger on his expedition through the uncharted Amazon wilderness. Next, as The Poison Belt plunged the world into a cloud of poisonous ether, Professor Challenger sought refuge in a sealed room equipped with cylinders of oxygen.

In this third novel of the series, The Land of Mist reacquaints readers with Professor Challenger as an avid Spiritualist. When Professor Challenger and his friend Edward Malone investigate a haunted house in Derbyshire, England, the professor initially presents himself as a skeptic of psychic phenomena. However, he soon discovers that there is more to this world than meets the eye.

Winner of the Lambda Literary Award: “A page-turner that brings to life turn-of-the-century New York’s Lower East Side.” —Library Journal Born in a Russian-Jewish settlement, Gutke Gurvich is a midwife who immigrates to New York’s Lower East Side with her partner, a woman passing as a man. Their story crosses with that of Chava Meyer, a girl who was attended by Gutke at her birth and was later orphaned during the Kishinev pogrom of 1903. Chava has come to America with the family of her cousin Rose, and the two girls begin working at fourteen. As they live through the oppression and tragedies of their time, Chava and Rose grow to become lovers—and search for a community they can truly call their own. Set in Russia and New York during the early twentieth century and touching on the hallmarks of the Progressive Era—the Women’s Trade Union League, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911, anarchist and socialist movements, women’s suffrage, anti-Semitism—Elana Dykewomon’s Beyond the Pale is a richly detailed and moving story, offering a glimpse into a world that is often overlooked. “A wonderful novel.” —Sarah Waters

The innocent Cornish girl shares the ghostly story with Benedict Lansdon, the handsome, illegitimate grandson of a family friend, and promises to show him the spot. But tragedy strikes when they meet at the pool, and  Angelet and Ben become  complicit in a crime that could send Ben to the gallows. Ben returns to Australia, but the pair feels bound by their terrible secret. After a whirlwind season in London, Angelet marries Gervaise Mandeville, a charming rogue with a weakness for gambling. As the casualties from the Crimean War mount, Gervaise decides to try his luck in the Australian gold rush. Angelet travels across the world with him, only to once again be ensnared in a fatal act of violence. Alone in the outback, Angelet faces her own day of reckoning from a long-ago crime—and gets a second chance at love.
