In the first half of the 20th century, war was fought on a global and industrial scale. Millions of men were flung into the grinder of World War I and World War II, leading to commensurately huge numbers of prisoners of war (POWs). Camps were built to hold thousands of captives, with their own barracks blocks, parade grounds, and even farms. In World War I, there were several fronts in the war - Britain, France, Belgium, and Germany faced each other on the Western Front, fought mostly in northeast France and Belgium, while Germany and Austria Hungary faced Russia on the Eastern Front, where much of the war was fought in East Prussia and what is now Poland. The Italians and Austrians fought in the region of northeast Italy, and the Austrians and Bulgarians faced Serbia and then later an Allied army based in Salonica in the Balkans. The Ottomans faced Russia in northeast Anatolia, the British and Allied forces in the Mesopotamian campaign (mainly in today’s Iraq), the British in Palestine, and the Allies at Gallipoli.
Regardless of rank, throughout the war, many of these men did not sit idle. Many spent their time preparing elaborate escape plans in the hopes of returning to their home nations and back to the fight. Following World War I, several books were published giving romantic accounts of successful escapes. For example, the wildly popular film The Great Escape (1963), has been a main factor in how the public views prisoners of war, and while that film was based on a book that details a mass escape of British and Allied prisoners from a World War II German prison camp for aviators, Stalag Luft III, a real escape from a German prisoner camp in World War I inspired the 1944 great escape from Stalag Luft III.

The experiments of both Capitalism and Communism are almost complete, and they both lead to one big organization controlling everything you do. In 1925, when this book was first published, it was true, and it is even truer today. If you desire an alternative, consider this book, which considers Distributism, a philosophy whereby the actual people own the actual means of production, and produce and sustain themselves with it. A philosophy summed up in Chesterton's famous proposal of "Three acres and a cow" as being catalyst to an ideal peasant state. For such a simple idea, it has proven very contrary to the ideas of those in power, which is to say, to those who want power. But for the rest of us, for the sane humans who desire peace and liberty, this book is a call to action against monopoly and the inevitability of global standardization, which the magazines call the Supply Chain and the Bible might call Babel and Babylon. Narrated in an accent based upon Chesterton's own, this performance expresses Chesterton's words as he himself might have, delivering them to an audience of his time.

Bill Morneau’s experience as Canada’s finance minister crystalized his vision for the country’s potential for growth and prosperity. Where To from Here looks backward with coolness and candor and forward with a fresh vision of all that Canada can — and must — become.

Much of the world reacted with surprise and admiration to the results of the 2015 Canadian federal election and the makeup of the government it produced. Led by a young charismatic leader with a storied family legacy on Parliament Hill, the Liberal government scored a historic victory, rising from third-party status to substantial majority. With a gender-equal cabinet and an ambitious agenda, it heralded a new approach to the country’s federal politics.

After an exciting and productive five years spent focused on domestic and global issues, Finance Minister Bill Morneau decided to take his leave from the same government. What prompted him to abandon one of the most powerful political offices in the country? How much of his decision was based on the often brutal give-and-take of politics? When did the penny drop, persuading one of Trudeau’s brightest lights to shift his talents and energies elsewhere?

In his own persuasive voice, Bill Morneau paints a positive picture, tracing his widely lauded entry into the political arena, the arc of his career in politics, major accomplishments and missed opportunities, his surprising exit, and a host of revealing episodes between the events. Told with measures of both pride and regret, he explores personalities, achievements, and failures with candor.

Morneau’s experience crystalized his vision for Canada and its potential for growth and prosperity. He shares a vision clearly and provocatively expressed, drafting a blueprint for the country’s future. Where To from Here looks backward with coolness and candor and forward with a fresh vision of all that Canada can — and must — become.
